Quick release steering wheels can be a blessing and a curse...

I love how he didn't even slow down. Looks down as if to say "Hmm, this isn't right." Puts the bastard back on and keeps going!
I bet you hear knocking sounds when he walks around.
He just handles emergencies well, I'm sure at least a little poo came out when he realized it was disconnected.
Ah, just enough caster to give him time to put it back. Anybody could do it.
Well when you're just out on a Sundray drive it's easy to get it back on. Try going a little faster...

LOL good .gif avatar material there!
On the OP's video - anybody notice the shifter? WTH is up with that? Just sloppy linkage I guess, but damn.
That's honey badger material there
I just pissed myself reading the first three comments!
You know, not to sound glib, but what the hell else was he supposed to do? Scream like a little girl and drive the car into the gravel? He had a scary thing happen and he acted appropriately.
I saw the thread title and wondered what GRMer followed me to lunch.
"Okay, fine, it is a rather large plate of huevos rancheros. I'm hungry."

If it wasn't a big important race (like with lots of money involved) I think the reasonable thing to do would be to slow down, go into the pits and make sure the release wasn't broken and that you had it put back on correctly.
At least it happened on a mostly straight section of the track. On a hair pin curve things would have been a little more exciting.

Exactly. Freaking out just makes it hard to deal with the situation.
I can get panicky, but if it's a true emergency, I just deal with it, and only start freaking out about 20 minutes later when it's safe to do so. I mean, if you're farked, you're farked, but if you remain calm, you might not be quite so farked, you know?
my first car.. a superbeetle with a type 4 in the back. Was missing the nut to hold the steering wheel on. I didn't know this as I had never bothered with the steering wheel. It came off in my hands one day... same thing, plopped it right back into place.
Then went out and got the nut
In reply to mad_machine:
That's the only time I've ever heard of the problem being with the nut behind the steering wheel, and it actually being hardware.
I always give the wheel a tug before taking off.
Steering wheel, phah. Did you see that pass he made? Takes him under braking sideways and controls the drift and keeps the exit right on the outside berm. Fantastic car control!
David
Clearly the wheel was overpowered by the awesomeness of that pass.
Shrug, I've had steering wheels come off on me too, it's not that exciting and not a reason to panic. Panicking and flipping out and such is reserved for after the excitement is over.

don't remember the guy ( or the car... just that it was fast ) who had his steering wheel come off going through the kink at CMP .... got it back on and the car back on track before T11 ... scared the corner workers a bit though .. not to mention his ride along ... don't remember if he was the instructor or the learner ....
Kept pretty calm but I think that pass was a bit of an asshat move. Good car control but if the guy he passed didn't give him room (it appears he was forced off track) the steering wheel issue wouldn't have mattered.
