I'm a member of a lot of forums, and this is the only one where pretty much everyone gets along. It's awesome.
One of the differences here is that most of us have all sorts of cars. For example, in my stable right now are the following:
-1979 Pontiac Trans Am (x2 actually, anyone want a project car?)
-1987 Shelby Dodge CSX
-2009 Subaru WRX
Pretty much, I have a FWD turbo car, a RWD muscle/pony car, and an AWD turbo car. I have the drivetrain trifecta.
Most of you guys are like this. I know a few of you personally, and the same amount of ridiculousness is going on in your driveways too. It's like a common ground where us car guys can come and bring with us all the weirdness that we have and talk about all of it in the open.
All the twisted automotive dreams we've had on our own have probably been realized in reality by someone else on here. Hell, I know there's a guy on here with a nasty Firebird track car (Radcapz), a rich history of Turbo Dodge insanity (Pat and his buddies, and about half of the rest of you) , and I know a good number of you have Subarus for daily drivers/ race cars (sachilles and Irish44j are a couple). Where else are you going to find that?
It's amazing.

But I agree with a lot of what people have said. This is definitely the best forum I've found, and it's the only one I participate in on a regular basis. I love that at least when it comes to old cars, everyone seems to like everything. And just recently I got sucked into an off-topic discussion where one poster and I had pretty heated debate. Only just a couple days later I was asking about something and that same guy sent me a private message with a bunch of helpful info.
That just wouldn't happen somewhere else.
You've been brainwashed. You can CLEARLY own all of them.
also been around for a decade now... more a lurker these days but hey... and I know that I bring down the average IQ and spelling quality ;-)
but I was just thinking about this yesterday, between the s10 forum and some other form I was doing research on... I forgot how in most other parts of the inter-webs that cheap cars just bring out young "kids" the s10 forum is amazing... mix of cheap cars and it being "merican" really brings out the trailer park trash... guess it's just breeding ground for a future fox or F body owner... :-/
I think some of it, is that we all tend to believe cars should be flogged. We generally don't build or obsess over a car that we then let sit in a garage or only bring to display at shows. We actually drive them, and usually beat the snot out of them.

That's a big part of it for me. Enjoy what you have and USE it, whether it's a $500 Festiva, a $5,000 Miata, or a $50,000 Corvette.

VERY true. The Challenge was the changing point for me. When I first attended in 2009, I was blown away by the cars that showed up. Everything from daily drivers, to weekend toys, to full-blown race cars were there, and all built on the cheap for one purpose: fun. These cars were getting used and abused, and I walked away from the event with my automotive perceptions altered. People were using what they had available to them to have more fun than I had ever seen with cars involved.
If I didn't join up here, I wouldn't have my CSX right now, as I found it on here in the classifieds. I also wouldn't have had a lot of the motivation and direction in my automotive life that I have right now. I'm motivated to work on stuff now after seeing what some of you guys are capable of, where before I was getting bored of car stuff because I was seeing the same old stuff over and over on dedicated forums.
I forgot to mention the GT40s.com club. That's a great group of guys there too. Mainly the older crowd though, and they have money. Those who don't have CRAZY skillz. LOL This is still, by far, my favorite forum. I hang out here all day while at work (minimized) and still check you when I get home. LOL

A wonderful mix here. Political, economic, life styles, professional. Contractors, doctors, engineers, entrepreneurs, students, and lots of unemployed. It brings so many different points of view and experience to the conversations. I looked in, was hooked. Oh, I'm almost 66yo, but feel right at home. Also, you can get advise, decent advise, on almost any question.

I just skip most of the political threads
Some are entertaining. Especially when a certain few get involved. I don't always agree, but it's interesting to see other's views on political matters.
I think one thing that makes this forum work is also the active participation and oversight by the moderators, which seems to have weeded out the trouble-makers and kept the e-bullies in check.
In reply to Conquest351:
"it makes you feel sub-par because of their awesome exotics and pictures of their insane homes and garages."
That reminds me of when I first joined the local chapter of the Porsche Club of America in the early 1970's. I was 22 and had purchased a clapped out 356 cabriolet for $500. I showed up to the first event and the owners of newish 911's wouldn't even say acknowledge that the 356 was even a Porsche, let alone talk to me.
I bought my second 356 in the 80's and by then they were accepted as full members, although the 914 or 924 owners were now carrying the stigma..
Of course nowadays its the 356 owners that look down their noses at 911 owners. :-)

You left out the porn star.
If'n it ain't got magical spinning Doritos, put it back on the trailer.
I some times see some resentment to folks with more money in to their motorsports habit here. The mag has sometimes come under criticism that maybe that market isn't "grassroots". That is what I have a tough time understanding sometimes. If someone has the disposable income to beat the snot out of a Ferrari and potentially wad it up into a pile of scrap metal, that's OK with me. So long as they see the point of a Lemons race series, then they are cool in my book.
Just getting out there and participating, even if only as a volunteer worker, it's what it's all about. Just getting out there an playing in whatever manner you are comfortable with is ten times better than sitting on the couch wondering what you could have done. In general, I think folks here are DO'ers.
What makes this place great is that the "DO'ers" figure out ways to accomplish things by hell or high water. :queueGodBlessAmericamusic:
It's a microcosm of what has made America great, and will continue to do so.
I like it because the Most Exalted Tom knows how to spell Skaneatles and Maynard Troyer, and every once in a while an interesting canoe floats by on this river of knowledge. Not to mention Andy would actually consider a 4 seat Morgan after having an Aston Martin. All of this and..............
I find it refreshing that nobody hits the Caps Lock button and tells someone who asks for help to USE THE SEARCH FEATURE.

To be honest, we've had a few intolerants who chastise newbies for not using the GRM (or even Google's) search functions. A pox on them, I say. Thankfully, the CAPS LOCK cretins are few and far between; the offenders are gently reminded and either reform or leave.
Some cars are crap but everyone here can relate to that and there is always a contributor who's had the same car.
I LOVE this bar.
I don't care about people asking questions that have been answered before, I have looked for the answers before, I either remember the answer, or can look it up again just as easily.
Repoasting, however, sometimes gets annoying. (even though I have been known to do it myself from time to time.)

Another vote for over here. I hardly go to vwboretex anymore, unless I'm looking for parts. All those NLAs in the parts catalogue are hinting that 1992 was longer ago than I remember..
Y'know, that's another reason I like this place. Y'all are probably the only guys I know (except for my SCCA buddies) who will immediately understand that last joke. And I like the variety, too. You guys with the old Japanese tin are tempting me to go down that road next time.

I have to say that this board is home for me. It just feels right.

The search feature sucks anyway. I do a google site search on here to get started. I think most of us here know when to ask or search.
The first issue of the mag I read had the $1500 challenge article. If I remember correctly, I joined the board in 2003. As many have already written, this place just seems like home.
I have to agree that I like this forum because it's a group of Do'ers. No place else would I ever look at a thread about Citroens or think Miatas are cool. First of all I can't fit in a Miata, I'm huge and would need goggles coupled with a legectomy. Second of all what forum would swoon over some dudes police auction Crown Vic? That's what makes this place awesome.
I could put up pics of my ex-Challenge piece of E36 M3 Mirage that's been in the garage for over a year and someone would say I need to swap an LS1 into it.
"Don't be a Bob Costas! Buy a welder and buy a parts Camaro!"
And then come up with pictures of one that's already been done. Awesome.
You guys are enablers.
My wife hates your website. :-D
No one here tells you that you can't do it.
Most people here tell you that you should do it.
Even if you shouldn't. You still can and that's cool.
