...but, can you bump start a modern car equipped with a manual transmission and electronic fuel injection? I saw a really cheap 2006 Kia for sale and the seller says it has a bad starter, so if I towed it down the street could I bump start it? That way I'd be able to test drive it and not get a surprise after buying it. There could be several other reasons why it won't start and I'd like to eliminate as many as possible.
As long as there is enough charge in the battery.

ive done it on a motorcycle with efi, never a car though
As long as the fuel pump primes......
Yes they will start. The motor does not know the difference between it being tuvned over with tge starter or the trans. As long as all the other systems are working it should fire.
Sometimes the starter in my Saturn don't work when its hot. Prolly bump started the car over 20 times last year.
Never been an issue.
Keep in mind that a lot of people don't know the difference between a bad starter and it seized engine.

I've done it to a '91 Jetta GLI a bunch. I think my Miata too...

This would be one of my concerns.
Yup. It will start. I have to bump start the race car atleast half the time I take it out of the trailer because I forgot to put a charge in the battery.
Get it up to 5 mph and pop the clutch in 3rd gear.

I bump-started my 97 Outback on flat ground with me and my 7 year old son pushing. It can be done.
