Ideally, wouldn't you want it the other way around. Title on the pretty car and no-title on the donor? Seems like you would end up swapping VIN, no? Or am I still asleep?

I am aware about lien's, however his E36 M3ty attitude would lead me to believe that he might not of done everything "by the book".
As others have said, let him crush it.
These aren't so expensive that $2k for a shell is worthwhile, particularly if it is an automatic.
I would look and see how much a decent running IS300 in Cali is going for and do a fly and drive before I messed around with Frankensteining this up from two corpses, especially if you don't get a title with the unwrecked one.
