Can you tell me where to find goodies for this motor? I know there's at least one person here running one of these, probably in an MX3.

Not looking for anything crazy, headers, maybe a chipped ecu (these exist for these motors?)

If anyone could point me in the right direction, that would be great.

Talking with a seller about a KLZE powered "something."

They like boost?

They do like boost.

I think KLZE + Protege (let it out of the bag) + boost = death, though.

I'm ok with a 13s car as a daily runabout. Don't need to go faster. I'd rather just keep the n/a KLZE howl, anyways.

Now, if it were in an MX6 or Probe, then i would consider boost.

I'm just looking for breathing mods, i've read about fuel pressure tips, maybe lightweight flywheel, stuff like that.

Can most of the stuff that's used on the KLDE be used on the KLZE? (Barring tuning, of course.)

yes.

Noice! Thank you sir.

Would you happen to know anything about the "chips?" From what i'm reading, apparently you can run an E-Prom, much like Hondas and DSMs...

I don't have anything useful to contribute except that I really want a klze miata.

are you running the KLZE ECU or the KLDE ECU?

You need to run the ZE ECU in order to have the correct VIRS points otherwise you won't be making correct as-advertised power. Most people run Megasquirt on these cars- there isn't really a chip or anything out that that works on them.

All mods that you can do on the DE will work on the ZE.... headers, light weight flywheel (stock mx-3 FW if your on a budget), pheno spacers, exhaust, ect. Intakes take a litlte moddifcation since the neck on the IM is longer than that of the DE. There is a nice dual feed fuel pressure kit available for these cars too.

Since ZE's have higher compression than that of the DE, they don't like boost. The majority of people with boosted KL engines are running DE's or hybrids with DE blocks/pistons/heads and maybe ZE cams.

I think I'm allowed to post up direct links in this forum...

Ebay has some decent prices on headers... thin wall but nothing some heat wrap can't fix.

It's got the ZE ecu.

Now i'm second guessing myself.

Can anyone here advise me if this is a KLZE or a KLDE?

it could be.... that is the intake manifold from a "Eunos 800" as it is called by it's JDM/Australian name, or the Mazda Millenia as it is called here. THe JDM Eunos 800 had the ZE's in them. But this manifold is often used by MX3 guys and others who do engine swaps with hood clearance issues. So just looking at the manifold alone doesn't mean you have a 100% ZE... pull the valve covers to look at the stampings on the heads/cams and block.

This is the more common ZE intake manifold found on most ZEs in probe/mx6s. http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/1/1762/3261/4404130047_large.jpg

Manifolds- KLDE, KLZE, Eunos 800. http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/5/web/605000-605999/605854_150_full.jpg

from all the corrosion on the valve covers and intake, it looks like that car has been sitting a long time....

Great info once again!

I'm inclined to believe it's a real KLZE, then. The price on these motors doesn't seem to be real high, so i don't think a KLDE w/ KLZE intake would be a shortcut taken in this case.

Either way.... even if it IS a KLDE, in a 92 Protege, it's still going to have some serious balls.

I was worried about the corrosion as well, but the seller says it runs fine, front calipers are dragging though, so he hasn't been driving it.

I have a buddy going out to look at it and inspect it this week, he's a die-hard MX3 nut, so i think he'll be able to accurately judge.

I think i'm probably going to go ahead and pull the trigger. For the price, i don't mind having to do some deferred maintenence.

Thanks!

yea either way it should be a fun ride... just be sure to give her 3000 oil changes. These engines are picky about fresh oil.

The KLZE or even the DE engines aren't demanding that high of a price these days so it's an affordable engine to tinker on.

Would this be going in your EGT or staying in the protege? Either way, sounds like fun.

Staying in the Protege. My GF is going to be driving the EGT once she finishes learning how to drive it, and i want to keep it in H Stock to attempt to learn how to drive well. The motor in it is running like a top anyways, i wouldn't want to mess with that.

The Celica is in FSP now, and god knows what the Protege would be in. I need a fun daily driver anyways, right?
