That might not be a bad thing. From what I remember of the GRM SRT-4 articles the Neon's rear suspension didn't work so well and required silly amounts of toe to be dialed in to get it to rotate. The stick axle might work out.

The only time I ever drove a PT I came away unimpressed though.

The beam rear axle is actually much more advanced than the ones used on the older FWD dodges. It uses a Watts link to locate it and it isn't a twist beam.

A PT GT recently sold in our area for $1200 with 75k miles. It only needed a headgasket. At that price, I'd have jumped on it if I had found it before the other guy. The 2.4's are incredibly stout, and a 12 sec PT would be a fun sleeper.

The bride has a PTGT. She is a little old lady & drives like one. The car is fine for what it is & is very quick with the HO engine. Not a car I'd much want but she's been very pleased & the few times I've driven it, it's been fun in a straight line.

I can say compared to a first gen neon, a pt cruiser is awful. I wouldnt buy one, there is really nothing good i can say about it.

Cloud cars, at least the older ones, had Honda style double a-arm suspension front and rear if I remember correctly.

That would be a cool sleeper.

Yes, I had to look this up because I didn't believe these cars actually used something non-strut based, but here it is from Allpar;

Front: High arm SLA (short-long arm): lower control arm with compression strut; concentric coil spring shock; sway bar linked to lower control arm

Rear: Quad-link SLA: A-arm, lateral link, tow-link and trailing link; concentric coil spring shock; sway bar linked to tow link.

They also list a base curb weight for the Stratus & Breeze at 2876 pounds which for a sedan of that size seems pretty decent. PT Cruiser (and I think this is the base, not the Turbo model which I'm sure weighs a bit more) comes in around 3170. So 300 pounds lighter with what on paper looks like much better suspenders? I think it's obvious that when you think you want a PT Cruiser GT, you really want a Plymouth Breeze and the engine from a PT Cruiser GT.

For the love of sweet golden baby Jesus, whose b-day is right around the corner, build up a 2.4L Turbo motor for cheap and stab it in any other Chrysler product than a PT Loser. Please!

It's a start, I think I'd also jack the front up with a straight axle, have injector stacks sticking out of the hood, and a bright metal flake paint job.

I believe Pobst was wheeling a Honda Accord at the time.

The pic you hotlinked shows a car as driven by David Donohue (Mark's son) and a team car was driven by Dominic Dobson.

I miss the old NATCC.

The cloud-cars had attractive exterior designs, woefully let down by typical C/P/D interiors, unexciting drivetrains/suspensions and miserable build-quality.

i've had similar thoughts, except with a Chevy HHR panel wagon that has all the Cobalt SS goodies stuffed under it with fake woodgrain glued to the sides of the body...

The NATCC Cloud cars were pretty awesome.

300hp from a naturally aspirated 2.0L DOHC motor, using factory parts, a lot of tuning work on the head and EFI and a sequential transaxle driving the front wheels.

Factory unibody chassis with relocated suspension pickup points.

Watched Dobs and Donahue race at PIR in the rain and beat the Hondas in the first race, it was pretty impressive to watch them lead in the second as well before the Hondas took over. Wanted to see more, but the series folded after that.
