So I just saw one pop up for sale from a guy I am acquainted with.
2009, 190k miles, automatic.
I drive 60-240 miles a day depending on what location(s) I am going to that day. I currently daily my 97 miata, which I love. It gets 26 mpg usually, so the 30-40 mpg of this is appealing.
I'm wondering, how many issues do these have? Especially at higher miles?
I haven't gotten to do much research on them yet either, but do they use the DEF?
The guy is asking $10,500, negotiable. I'm not really sure if its really feasible to do right now, but it looks quite nice and sounds tempting.
Biggest downside besides the price, it that it's red, so that is more likely to be a cop magnet...

They dont seem all that common around here in BMW land. That just seems like a lot of money for a those miles in a none 3/4ton diesel pickup.
My coworker bought a 2013 Chevy Volt with 34k miles on it for $13,000. That seems like a good mpg buy to me.
I have a good friend with one. He loves it, especially after he chipped it for ~500ft/lbs. It's now a rocketship. They do use DEF, but he says it's not a big deal, and it lasts quite a while.
I don't think he's had many issues, but I also think his has significantly fewer miles on it.
Thanks for the input so far!
The guy selling it says it's a pretty low maintenance car, but he is the guy selling it...
Just texted him for more info. His only has 60k but he's had no problems with it. He says they do better if you use better diesel and drive them hard or for longer trips, otherwise you get carbon buildup issues. He'd fit in well around here - has a Capri that he's swapping a 2.3T from a Turbo Coupe into, and a Midget that's getting an overdrive trans, plus a few other projects. He came from a GTI which was kind of a nightmare, which he dumped when the warranty ran out.
He says he's keeping the BMW as long as possible.
I can't imagine paying $10k for a BMW with 200K on the clock. As much as I love BMWs.
My new job I'll have everything paid off in 18 months, and really want an M2, but I'm still scared by it even though on average I'll only be putting 100 miles per week on one.

Its a modern 3 series with ~400 lb ft that runs the 1/4 in low 14s and just gets faster if you modify it, while getting 36+mpg.
I don't understand how they aren't more well known. It's the only post-e46 3 series that i would make an effort to own.
they are very nicely done, almost indistinguishable from the i from the driver's seat. Except with a bunch more torque. Never sounded like a diesel, never really smelled like one either.

Which is funny because the gasoline-engined one has some weird idle feature that makes it sound like a diesel.
Well, due to the current status of my wallet, I'm going to hold off on this one, but I'm thinking in 6-12 months or so I'll be looking for one of these, probably with lower miles too.
400 ft. lbs., well huh. CarGurus search says they're out there, wagons too. Love the '09 335xi, gonna hafta look into this. Can you say zee Germans rollin' coal.
