It works for the Cherokee as well. There is a shop that specializes in the OM617 swap. A Google search should find them easy enough. It's no power house but I think it would be a fun swap! I wouldn't mind doing one myself someday. The VW swap has been done as well even using the later model TDI.

Is it wrong that this idea is strangely very appealing to me? Small diesel 5spd 4x4 truck (or SUV - I assume this would work well for the Cherokee as well?)

I suspect the OM617 will not easily go into an early pre-4.0 Cherokee, though. When the 4.0 came out, they changed the firewall to accomodate the length of the motor and the om617 is probably only slightly shorter than the 4.0.
