It works for the Cherokee as well. There is a shop that specializes in the OM617 swap. A Google search should find them easy enough. It's no power house but I think it would be a fun swap! I wouldn't mind doing one myself someday. The VW swap has been done as well even using the later model TDI.

Being it is a carbed 2.8 a oM617 or other non- copmuterized desiel would be good swap option IMO.
Is it wrong that this idea is strangely very appealing to me? Small diesel 5spd 4x4 truck (or SUV - I assume this would work well for the Cherokee as well?)

I suspect the OM617 will not easily go into an early pre-4.0 Cherokee, though. When the 4.0 came out, they changed the firewall to accomodate the length of the motor and the om617 is probably only slightly shorter than the 4.0.

Tried sending you a message but it failed. If your friend is interested I have a 1988 Eliminator 4.0L manual thats been swapped to 4wd with about 5" lift.
PM sent, I actually got an email from him yesterday with a link to what I believe to be your Craigslist ad, completely independent from this thread. Small world.

How about a fly and drive for this?

More fun than welding in floor pans.
Hey, thanks for the shout-out.
OP, I know you're not interested in my truck, but let me know if there's any questions I can answer for you. If mine doesn't sell, I'll probably just hang on to it. It's a neat little truck, and pretty useful.
