I have it bypassed on both my cars. Supra and 325i, never had an ice up situation, if I do I have a clutch pedal and a key. Nothing to do with power for me. I do it to cut down on the rats nest of hoses on modern cars, there's always one in the way when you are trying to work on something, the less there is the better as far as I am concerned.

Many older cars had a heater tube running from the air cleaner to the exhaist manifold for heat.

The theory of a greater throttle opening has been proven. It started with WW2 aircraft. This also was part of the theory behind the development of the "overdrive" and is used on many newer cars built into the transmission as an extra gear. Think 6 spd. Of course the reduction of rpm is a factor also.
