I'd be mad. I'm not sure what I would do. I probably would have not paid, and/or issued a chargeback. I'd then go elsewhere or my own driveway rather than take the risk or inconvenience, even if it settles some imaginary score I had in my head.

In reply to iceracer: When I bought the car to refresh into my daily commuter, it had really had a hard 13 years on New York City roads. I replaced the struts/shocks, brakes etc, and over the last couple of months I replaced most of the suspension components (front arms, including ball joint, tie rods, rear upper arm, rear toe link, all four sway links, sway bar bushings etc.). New tires were the last thing before it becoming essentially an appliance, so I wanted to make sure the car was "zeroed". The old rear tires had weird wear pattern (shoulders "burnished" and some cupping) which led me to believe there was too much toe and probably too much negative camber. Having done that much suspension work, it only made sense to do an $80 alignment after buying tires that cost about 30% of what I paid for the car... Rear toe is set by the eccentric bolt on the toe link, rear camber by an eccentric on the lower arm. That's the thing: All the bolts the guy would have to turn to do any adjustments were nice, new, clean and non-crusty...

You don't have to go to a race shop to get a good alignment, you have to find a good tech with decent machinery.

I've never had an issue with having chains do my alignments, but I tell them what I want up front and I know which tech to ask for.

As far as the quality of the other work it all depends on who's running that particular shop, just like maacos and other chains, some are great and some are miserable.

Mavises (Mavisis? Mavi?) are really hit or miss. I used to deliver to one that I wouldn't trust with a bicycle and another tell me they couldn't let my mother's 6 month old car leave without $1000 in suspension work. I don't know how since I carried the tire in from the car to get replaced and they never offered to reinstall it but from looking at a tire that had a big hole in the tread they could tell all four struts were bad.
