My 86 Gti needs some new shoes. The standard 185/60r14 tires available are either econobox tires or sort of race car tires... (Dunlop Direzza) Is it time to move up to fifteen inch wheels for a wider selection?

15" is going to give you roughly 1000x the selection in tires. I know for a fact if you walked into my store wanting a 185/60r14, the tire I'd be forced to put you in would not be something you'd want on a race track. Or a curvy road. Ever.
I'm in the same boat with my 1st gen Neon. How many miatas, MR2s, Hondas, etc. are stuck with economy car tires because no manufacturer makes a decent 14in tire anymore?
I'm there too. It's either econo allseasons or 200TW. Ended up with General Altimax HP on my Miata..
I bought 16" wheels for my 82 Camaro when it became impossible to buy a decent performance 235/60 15, and I'm now shopping for 17's because the same thing has happened to the 245/50 16's.
The mr2 came with falken ziex in 14 inch and I may be picking up two new rear tires. I have general altimax Tires on the Camry (15in) and like it for everyday performance on a DD. I'm thinking about moving the MR2 up to 16 inches for this reason, but decent performance tires seem to be hitting 17 and up territory.
I went from 14s to 15s or 16s on DD#2's Celica because I couldn't find anything in 14s that didn't come from WalMart with a lifetime tread wear guarantee.
In reply to David S. Wallens: You can change tire size to 205/55R15 and find some ultra high performance summer tires in that size, but the selection is a little small.
In reply to Streetwiseguy: You can change your tire size to a 225/50R16 or a 225/55R16 and have 40 or so total tire choices each from the Tire Rack.

Looks do-able. Discount tire direct has... 3... hmmm But then they look comprable to the Dunlops... I guess in 195/60r14 it is all or nothing.
