The time has come to replace the tires on my DD 2004 Pontiac Gran Prix GTP COMP G. When I purchased the car about four years ago the dealer had put on a brand spanking new set of BFG traction T/A , overall the tires have been good with no tire noise and good traction.
Since this is not a small light weight RWD sports car what would be good replacement tire?
Tire size is 225/55/17

I am not trying to get FTD or clean out my bank account (under $125 each), this is a big and heavy car. Any other tires I should bee looking at?

stay away from the falken 912's and are u looking for all seasons of just summer tires? the kumho 4x and the hankook ventus v2 concept are both very nice all seasons.
KATYB I am looking for an all season at this time.
Hankook
Kumho
I have the 4X on the SeX in 225/45/17. Great tire. Good grip in the dry/rain, not bad in the deeper snow. Quiet, smooth and not harsh on the bottom.
Another tire I would HIGHLY recommend is hte Platinum LX. That is a really nice grand touring type tire.
Good stuff guys keep it coming
The bfgs are good tires, I had a set of the old version and I was happy with them.
Based upon Tirerack's tests, I'm inclined to give the nod to the Kumho Ecsta 4X. While I always take their advice with a tablespoon of salt, it's also worth noting that Consumer Reports gives the Kumho Platinum LX a "poor" rating for snow performance. But if it were my car, I would seriously consider upgrading to seasonal tires (Summer and Winter).
General Altimax HP H? I'm a fan of Generals, they tend to rank just behind the big name rubber for a whole lot less money.
I really liked the Continental Extreme Contact DWS's I ran on my last WRX. Good grip and they wore like iron. When I traded the car in, they had over 35k on them and they looked almost new.

+1 on the DWS. I work at a shop and It is what I sell to every customer. I put the DW on my personal car and I lover them. If you want to go cheaper then I have heard great things about the Azenis PT-722, but again my go to is always the DWS.
Another vote for the DWS's. I have them on the forester and they are a great balance of sport, noise, and value. I'm going to get a set for the wife's Volvo soon as well.
Personally I liked the falken 912's (solid 3 season tire) on my old MS3, but I will say the Goodyear Eagle GT's that I have on the protégé are super impressive so far.
I'm yet another professional tire guy that will recommend the DWS. I put them on my wife's 6 wagon because we only run one set of wheels on her car. Fantastic traction and comfort for an AS tire. If you want a little longer tread life look at Conti Pure Contacts too. They give up a little of the DWS's traction for better wear.
Fringe benefit of Conti's they cover all road hazard on their tires for the first year or first 2/32" just for buying their tires.

Another one for the DWS. Have them on my Focus and the Transit Connect and they work well on both
If you like the BFGs that are on it now, why not get another set of them?

The G Force Sports were super. I had them on the MR2. The new ones are even better. They're the street tires on Tom Celica. But they are not all season. They grip all day long in the dry, but if there's even snow in the five day forecast the car won't move. Seem to be decent in rain, though.
Thanks guys I will look over your suggestion tomorrow, I did live with a set of Conti's on my 04 GTI (factory tire when new) and loved them. Might have to relive the past.
Thanks Paul B
So far I agree with the DWS and the 722. Can't really get on board with anything else mentioned... except for the A6 of course.
We just replaced a set of Hankook Optimo's with Goodyear Eagle GT's on my son's 2000 Impala 9C1. They have a rebate on them currently. Walmart has a site to store purchase online (they have a lot more tires online than at the store). They ship them from the warehouse to the store for free. You can either pick them up or have them mounted up at the store.
I'm happy with the Ziex 912s I got for my P71. I was forced to get three season tires early when the stock Goodyear Eagle RS-As wore out MUCH earlier than expected (I was hoping to stretch them till winter, buy snow tires, then buy summer tires in the spring). They're quieter, grippier, and wear better than the Goodyears, though I admit that wouldn't take much. They held up to one autocross with no noticeable wear, while one autocross took half the remaining life out of the Goodyears. (Please note: cop tires are NOT the awesome that Elwood says they are.)
That said, I SERIOUSLY kicked myself when literally the day after I got the Falkens, a friend offered to sell me the Generals mounted on the OEM Mustang wheels for the 2005 GT he no longer owned for less than I paid for the Falkens alone...
