Duramax I believe is going to urea for 2011 as well. Look forward to it's mileage. Wait a couple years before you run out and buy the Ford, its their 3rd diesel since 03'(first one built by Ford). Make sure it lives up to the hype, the previous 2 had their issues.

Yeah, but those guys are trying to claim that a 3/4 ton full-sizer is getting mid 30's And I bet the superfine crystals in the Smooth Away really remove unsightly hair in one swipe too.

Just wait. I'll have the crow ready.

Here's the dude from the press launch with his notes.... http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29847

These new trucks will have serious electronic controls in them though. Run out of Urea in a Duramax and all you can drive is 4mph. (you get your speed capped at 55mph when it is seriously low). And try replacing the DPF with a test pipe, that will cause the engine to shut down completely.

Well Whatever.. If youre interested I can go into the changes that the adoption of urea did to engine development and how much crap we had to scrap and yes.. simplify...

ohh misinformation....

the 6.0 and 6.4 are International engines, not ford made. Sorry play again.

I wasn't saying I could match it, just citing my current figures in an emissions truck with similar power. At 28mpg real-world it would be just under 18% better than my highway mileage right now. Thats pretty good but not enough to make me pee myself.

The Fords, on the other hand, suck ballz out of the box and that figure would be a 50%+ gain on an '09 King Ranch.

Hey, it wouldn't be the first time I ate a crow or three. I just see that these press types (now, we know when auto writers are on company paid junkets they are TOTALLY objective, right?) drive a truck, on a specific route, under near perfect conditions with speed already determined and they are trying to eek out every mpg they get about 30. Now, some guys drive the truck across the country, no predetermined route, no predetermined speed and get the same mileage? Sounds fishy to me.
Snugie anyone?

That is what unk577 said. Ford had the 6.0 in 03, 6.4 in 08, and the new Ford built engine coming up.

So if they can get 700 lb/ft out of that thing in a Super Duty.

Can we please bring back REAL half-ton trucks and put a 4-banger diesel using that technology into it please?

I'd like a truck the size of my '96 F-150. You know, trucks that an average size person can reach over the bedrails WITHOUT needing a ghey bedside step.

With the payload of my '96 F-150 (2200 lbs)

With a 4-banger diesel getting around 250 - 300 lb/ft and the fuel economy to go with it.

Clearly it's possible, so let's do it and make a truck people actually want to buy.

I hate to tell truck makers, we don't all want a monstrous dually crew-cab that you can't park anywhere. My SRW 8'box 1/2ton is the perfect truck for me.

good half ton trucks were on the way until the automakers went south. Dodge is saying their going to start production soon of theirs soon.

Um, so does this mean no more regen cycles where the Fords get 8mpg and can barely get out of their own way while shooting a couple foot flames out the exhaust? Dang.

How much does urea cost? Are these vehicles saving money with their gas savings or just saving gas?

28 - 34 mpg from a 3/4 or 1-ton truck is impressive.

I bet the Ranger can get at least 100 mpg too.

I'd like to know this too. What's the cost of the urea and how often does it need to be refilled? Otherwise, these new diesel trucks are NICE. I'm really digging the new GM 1 tons.

with all this talk about urea... what about some that don't need urea.... I'm strongly considering a VW TDI, I like the idea of 40+ mpg on the hiwy.... you all have beat up on the big trucks and their diesels how 'bout some props / cons on the smaller ones ?

Let me preface this by saying, these are mercedes dealer prices, as we don't have real costs on urea yet.

On a Merc SUV with a diesel, you fill it every 10k miles and it costs $11 per half gallon. The tank holds 8 gallons. Do the math.

Now, Urea prices will come down quickly. All new OTR trucks will be using Urea as well, so I expect it to cost the same as a gallon of diesel shortly. (shortly means a few years). Volume needs to go up on the stuff for the price to come down.

edit: Liquid urea fertilizer is below $2 a gallon now. Same basic stuff I think.

This is why I want to save my '82 Ram. That thing is perfectly sized and beautifully simple.

IF you can find a new 1/2 ton in 2wd/standard cab, they arn't too bad

I think I'd like to stuff the Sprinter diesel motor in an early 90s Nissan Hardbody to make possibly the most useful all-around machine ever.

The Hardbody came with a diesel overseas. Unfortunately, it was naturally aspirated. Maybe get one of those and add boost?

In reply to ignorant:

I did the math on the urea cost.

By my math, the urea vehicle is about 27 - 30% more fuel efficient. (based on 28mpg vs. 22mpg). At $3 per gallon for diesel the cost per mile of fuel would be $.136 for the non-urea and $.107 for the urea vehicle. Add in the urea and it bumps to $.109.

Another thought on urea. Does it have to be filled by the dealer to keep warranty or can one do it on their own? The hassle of going to the dealer for a refill is something else to consider in the "cost" of ownership.

Nissan already has/had a turbo diesel in that family of engines. I thought they were using it in the HB.

They also put a diesel in the 720 PU before the HB. That one was slow!

They may have a turbo diesel in them. Check with Mexico, they just stopped making Hardbodies there.
