Is a FWD 4AC or 3A head identical to a RWD (Corolla SR5) 4AC head? What about the carb?
I have an '85 Corolla SR5 with a seized camshaft stored at my Parents' place in NY and was thinking of trying to get a replacement head put on it this summer and drive it back to Atlanta. I can get FWD 4AC and 3A heads no problem in the JYs here and the Toyota forums indicate that they're identical. Anyone know for sure?
Thanks!
Check the gasket interchanges, that will tell a lot.
Why not just replace the whole motor? It would be easier and cheaper. If the cam seized, the rest is probably junk too.
I don't have a way to get a whole motor up there form Atlanta, but I can take up a head with me.
Could you.... take two trips? One with a head, one with a bottom end?
Haha. It had occurred to me. I could also try to find one in NY, but I think most of these old Toyotas have long since disintegrated there.
Checking with toyodiy....
It appears that the AE82, AE86, and AE71 all used the same head - 11101-15031. 3AC heads are likely to be different... but still should fit/work, as long as you use all the plumbing from your head.

That might make finding an engine a bit easier and cheaper there via one of the junkyards, honestly. The motors often outlived those cars, and there's none of those cars left there, so the demand is low.

I might look into it some more, but since they were pretty unremarkable cars and all of them rusted out a decade ago I suspect that most of the engines were crushed years ago along with the cars.

Thanks. Yeah, I think I'll grab an AE82 head in the next few weeks and give it a shot.

This, especially if the engine also came in thing more crapcan than a FR corolla. A lot of yards dont pick up on the interchange. For example I discovered I can get a good Mazda BP in Detroit for not much money at all, just dont ask for a Miata or Protege engine, ask for a Escort GT motor.

So long as the demensions of those parts are the same demensions I don't see why it can't be done...
Also, I'm new here and can't figure out how to make my own thread... I have a question about an electrical part that I can't find anything on. I know what it does. But I have no idea where it goes. Pic below the car won't even attempt to start without it.
