Speaking of slow shifts, bio-dad (who wasn't the greatest, but, eh, moving on...) was ridiculous at shifting. Street racer back in the day, would regale with stories that I took with a grain of salt.
Especially the one where he said he only lost 300 rpm between shifts. No way that was true.
In my trusty Datsun Z at the time, 14-1500 was the norm, and I was trying. I practiced and practiced and practiced, I think the best I ever did was 12-1300 between gears, and that was once. Figured he was off by a factor of three.
A couple years later he was out, and he drove my car. He drove it for a bit to get the feel, then ripped off a few passes down the street.
Never more than 500rpm between shifts. Consistently. He couldn't get it better, he never lost more than that.
Decades after his last street race.
Holy carp. His claims were no BS, and I was awestruck.
For those who can REALLY shift, manual or auto makes no difference.

Rev hang is not a new thing; it goes back, what, a decade or so? It's effectively a tool to satisfy emissions requirements. It does, however, make it more difficult to shift smoothly and match speeds.
It is common to defeat it with a tune.

It goes back at least 3 decades.

Could the off corner and accelaration differences between the two be because the auto only has a flex plate to spin up versus the sitck's flywheel and clutch
Don't forget the heavy torque converter full of fluid and clutches.
An update, because it made a HUGE driving difference.
Disconnect that stupid interior engine sound speaker. It drowns out the actual engine noise, and doesn't accurately match what the engine is doing.
Now you will hear (pretty softly) what the engine is actually doing. The car becomes much more drivable then.
If you're at all curious about doing this, this video is the quickest and simplest guide to doing it. Takes all of 5-minutes.
