So I haven't had any luck finding a buyer for my 914 Outlaw project, so it's time to get working on mocking-up the driveline. After lots of back-and-forth with different combinations, I think that in the long run the most fun will be a V-8. In saying that, the cheapest, easiest and lightest combo with be an LS. Also, the best resale when it's done will likely be a good sounding V-8, so don't try to persuade me otherwise. The question that I have for everyone is what transaxle to put behind it? When I build the car it will be a stock motor just to get it running, but if I like how it turns out, there will be more power down the road. Does anyone here have any first hand experience with either the Subaru or Porsche 6-speeds? Which one will take 350hp better? Will either take 400hp and V-8 torque? This will not be a drag car, just a lightweight toy to play with in the mountains here in NEPA. Possibly a track day or hillclimb but no hard standing starts.
Any insight is greatly appreciated.
The 986 Boxster S 6-speed is a fantastic gearbox with long gear ratios and a less than ideal stock shifter linkage setup that leads to broken synchros, making used ones a little difficult and expensive to pick up. This is the 0A2 box iirc and is an evolution of the 01E Porsche/Audi box used in the original Quattros and the 944/968.
I would consider an Audi transaxle from the B8 S4/S5 generation, the 0B4. This is a completely different gearbox than all of the other Audi/Porsche boxes and has held over 800 whp in both n/a V8 and boosted V6 applications. This is the transaxle the 4.0TT V8 Audo guys are swapping in.
If you do decide to go with the Boxster gearbox, I have one sitting around that I'd let go pretty cheap. It's a 6-speed from my 01 Boxster S. But it needs a rebuild, or at least some kind of repair. It moves and shifts just fine, but it makes a constant whining noise.

The 0b4 box also makes things much more compact since the outputshafts are further forward on the case meaning the engine can be farther back in the chassis. That does mean the adapter and flywheel/clutch setup is much more complicated. I haven't seen them used but my only question would be if the starter interferes with the differential.

So how would one search the innerwebs looking for reputable seller of such a thing? Is there a search engine for parts by mfg. #?
FWIW, the 01E was used in ur-S4/S6, the RS2, anything with a manual trans behind the 2.7 twin turbo, and V8 S-cars. It is stronger than anything Subaru had made. People drag race them behind twin turbo V8s and inline 5s pushing past 1000hp.
It was a stronger evolution of the 016, which was used in the original quattros as well as 4000 and 5000 quattros. It is about on par with the STI 6 speed or slightly weaker.

JHM Motorsports is the go to for everything Audi transaxle.
The STi 6-speed has a pretty good reputation, note that there are different 6-speeds used in non-STi Subarus though:
