The local Dodge place doesn't have a Dart, but the Toyota dealer somehow got an FR-S. I've been chatting...
Josh Hammil: the one we have access to, but not at this time, is an automatic and stickers for 26.030
Josh Hammil: but the problem we are running in to is that it's in the shop getting some accessories added to it
You: What do you mean "access to, but not at this time"?
Josh Hammil: Lowered, window tint, spoiler, etc.
You: And how much is all of that going to add to the price?
Josh Hammil: I'm not really sure about that, I can definitely find out for you
Josh Hammil: As of right now, the only things that have been put on are wheels and tires = $3800, durashield and window tint = $1100
Josh Hammil: so that would be added to the price of 26030
You: So you are already at $30930?
Josh Hammil: yes sir

$3800 for wheels and tires? How much of that is the charge for disposing of the brand new stock wheels and tires?

Exactly. The Scion price-lock means these guys (about the slimiest dealer in the state) have to make up all of their extra profit somewhere else. The Toyotas all have "wheel lip moldings, paint protection, door edge guards, and Scotchguard" for like $5000 and "Northwest Market Adjustments". I honestly have no idea how this place is still in business.
At 30k how does it stack up against the 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8L R-Spec retailing for $29.6k including freight and delivery?
I loved the $400 glorified car wash they gave me for my focus.
This reminds me when the new Camaro first came out. My buddy was thinking about picking up one of the base models, so we went by the dealer and looked at a couple. The dealership had added "The Sport Package" to all the base models they had in stock. This package consisted of 400$ Drag wheels with the factory tires mounted on them, window tint, and skunk strips. All for the low, low price of 4995$.
The salesman kept going on and on about how awesome the sport package was, and how some lady had just bought one that weekend and won a car show with "The Sport Package Camaro".
He didn't buy one...
$5k in that price range makes a big difference. I was just pricing out Focus STs (no intention of buying), and there's a very slippery slope from the Base ("sport seats") to the ST2 (partial leather Recaros) to the ST3 (full leather Recaros). A local dealer has an ST3 with the Tangerine Orange paint and a moonroof that stickers for over $30K. I'm sorry, but at that price I'd be shopping for a Mustang with the 5.0.
Was lookin' at a branny new '92 Chevy 1500 4X4 PU back in the day, dealer had a additional charge of $249 for graphics... they were the no more than 2" X 5" Heartbeat of America" stickers on the rear quarters. Just another WTF moment at the Chevy dealer.

MINI dealers were doing the same thing back in 2003-4. My g/f's '03 MCS had two big $ dealer add-ons: $800 for the driving lights on the bonnet and almost $900 for the body-color painted dash (wasn't a factory option until '05). But the car was in the showroom and was otherwise spec'd exactly how she wanted it and the wait back then was almost 3 months, so she bought it.

Because most people are truly ignorant when it comes to buying cars and are only looking for instant gratification.
There's a saying in the bidness: if you need to sell a bag of cowE36 M3, just chrome it.
God, I hate dealing with car salesmen.

They're still doing that near me, was just shopping for cars in the last couple of months. All the justa Coopers I could find in stock on their website cost more than a base Cooper S MSRP due to all the addons

True... but the difference now is ordering a MINI doesn't take nearly as long. Back in '03 there was a waiting list for a production slot and many "dealer stock" cars were sold before they even reached the lots.

The Toyota/Scion dealer here only charges $600 for window tint and door edge guards. Doesn't matter if it's a 2-door Tacoma or a Sienna van.
The sales dork asked me if he could sell me a car today.
I said, "Nah, I'll wait until the truck rolls in, and grab one before you put the $600 tint job on it."

I used to LOVE when people were willing to buy vehicles with a ton of overpriced accessories on them when i was selling vehicles. I once sold a normally 12,600 polaris ranger crew for 23,000. The weird thing is that these customers were always the most excited and happiest in the end! So was I cause commissions skyrocketed!
I did get pissed at the parts manager sometimes though for adding a ton of crap cause the vehicles would sit on the floor forever 90% of the time!
Are we being trolled? Where is the trolling of the local dealer?
In reply to Osterkraut:
Trolling as in angling to get a test drive with no intention of buying, not trolling as in letting him know that I accidentally the whole thing.
