Many years ago I remember reading an article about what it took to upgrade your e30 to m3 specs. The article I think was a multi part but the one I am looking for is about the motor build. Does anyone know the issue it was in? I know it I at least 10 years back and it may be more than that.

It was one of the big reasons I subscribed to GRM

If you figure out what issue it is from, I may have it out in the garage. If I have the issue, you can have it. recently gave away a whole box of back issues and there is a filing cabinet drawer still full of older issues. I don't want them and wasn't even aware my wife was stashing them out there until a month or so ago.

Hmmm, that's not ringing any bells. Plus the E30 M3's S14 engine basics aren't shared with the rest of the E30 line. We supercharged an E30 318is a while back. Could it have been that? (I know, not really the same thing.)

Something about putting the crank from a diesel in it is all I remember to up the displacement and for the strength.

Maybe it was a e36. Like I said I was at least ten years back I think.

I know you can use an M47 crank in an M42 to build a stroker with some machine work, which supports the idea that it would have been an E30 318is. You can also do the same with an M20 eta crank and pistons to build a stroker.

There is a diesel crank that fits the e30 6 cylinder motors. Came in a 5 series, and was pretty rare I think in the US 524td comes to mind.

Plus we have discussed putting E30 325i heads on eta blocks to create stout 2.7-liter engines.

In reply to David S. Wallens:

That's a Super-Eta, right? I remember that article and might have it in the archives.

I recall an article that wasn't an E30 upgraded to M3 specs, but instead was a modified 325e with a later "i" head that could turn comparable lap times to an M3.

Guy in my track club has one of the 2.7L strokers. Awesome car. It's actually fast on a short tight track. Not up to modern speed standards if the track gets to be over 1.75 miles. But an awesome car, and endless fun to drive I'm sure. If I didn't already have a 2.5L E21, I would probably build one.

You can use an M/S52 crank + overbored pistons for a 3.1L M20.
