Is there a definitive book on these? I gets bits and pieces of do this but don't do that all over the internet but I like a reference for beginners if there is one.

This ^^^^^^^ X1000.
The SCCA GCR is a good place to start if you want to get the gist of what building one involves. Another place I reference is the NASCAR Rule book. NASCAR in particular is a good reference as there cadge design has been "tested" many times over the years and changes made to address issues they have found. The NASCAR dictatorship that is the France family has been reasonably active in driver safety. This was put front and center when they lost D.E. Sr. The $$$$$$ lost by NASCAR with his death was huge and it finally woke them up that it is in there interest to mandate driver safety and thus have no problems making changes to things when a problem is found even if it is mid season.

I've looked at NHRA rules but I'm wanting more of a do this because of this instead of a just do this or else. I'll have to check out the NASCAR rules.
I don't mean to hijack, but is there any company that will take a CAD rollcage or tube-chassis and cut/bend/notch/cope and ultimately ship a kit ready to be welded up? I know that the Exocet guys have a vendor, but I don't know if they do one-offs.
Yes. G&H Diversified in Houston, TX, or Troy Laser in Warren, MI.
You'll probably find you can pay 50% more and have four cages to sell and one for yourself.

I looked at the SCCA and NASA rule sets when laying out the cage for my Midlana project. I made it compatible with both sets of rules so my options were open.
In reply to chaparral:
What does a place like that typically charge? I work for a contract manufacturer that specializes in tube bending and have always wondered about the feasibility of offering a service like that.
I have a kirk racing cage in my track car. They sent me all of the tubeing pre-bent. All I had to do was cut to length and weld it in. SCCA legal and it was around $800 shipped if I remember correctly.

The simple answer is do this because this what we have deemed an acceptable level of safety for this type of competition.
More complex than that and I don't even know how you'd do it because if all the different cars and constructions.
Hence guidelines.

Really, $800 and it wasn't even coped or anything? Anyone wanna go halfsies on a tube bender with me? There's going to be a lot of people caging ND Miatas in the next year or so I would imagine...
