This is a MkII GTI (so, FWD application)

It has the Ground Control camber / caster plates. My question is are there any downsides to clearancing the round hole where the top of the strut bearing would normally sit? If I could grind away a 1/2 inch or so at the rear and laterally, I'd get a lot more +ve caster (see pic)

That's what GC recommended on my 280Z installation

Great! But that's not what I'm asking.

I'm asking if it's going to compromise the integrity of the strut towers if I nibble away at the edge. The edge has a raised ridge which might be making it more rigid.

I don't know about your car, but on our ChumpCar we cut the holes in the strut tops wider using a flame wrench so we could mount STi struts and strut tops to our Dodge.

So far the car has survived almost 24 hours of track time, including a few offs, with no apparent damage.

If you're concerned, add another layer of steel between the strut top and the body of the car and stitch weld it in place.

Im not sure how many other mods you are looking to do, but from what i understand you can get more caster by swapping to mk4 a-arms (it will widen the track though, so you have to need mk3 tie rods and a corrado rear beam). As far as the original question, I probably wouldnt if it was my car, but I know alot of people do it without problems.
