I went on a road-trip yesterday to pick up a derelict SCCA GT-3 rx7, that my buddy is looking to either flip, or part-out. While we were there, we also picked up a couple 12a's. One is a later engine, which will donate its plates for one of the 13b's my buddy is building for his new chassis. The other is an old twin-distributor 12a, which he has no use for. It's complete, and I know that they are relatively rare. But, are they worth anything, or are they "rare" because nobody tries selling them because nobody wants them?
Parts are very hard to come by. Very little interchanges with single distributor models, even the tension bolt orientation is different. Mazda called the single distributor engine "12B" in internal documents, it was changed so much.
Occasionally the apex seals will come up on Australian eBay. I do not know if '74-up side seals will work in them. At least the carbon-aluminum apex seals meant the rotor housings don't wear very much. Since the chrome is directly on aluminum, they had chrome lifting and cracking issues if the aluminim corroded, or the engine was run hot. (If you put single dizzy internals in one, do not use iron apex seals, carbon-aluminum only!)
If they are worth anything, I have a twin dizzy as well. I guess an original air cleaner assembly is worth stupid money down under.
Just curious if your friend had any of Lynn Hanover's old stuff.
Also, are the rotors in the 12A you are dismantling any good? Been looking for a pair for a while now. Everything I have is all egged out at the apex slots.

Thanx for the info, Pete. I will let my buddy know that you may be interested in the rotors if they're in good condition. He may also have some other rotors laying around, but he purged most of his 12a stuff last year. The only thing he had from Lynn was his fd GT-3 car, which he flipped to some guy out east. Pretty interesting engineering in that car.

The guy whose house we rallycross at in SW Ohio had one of his cars, too. Well, when I saw it, it was tubes cut up on a scrap truck, and a transmission with a very funky remote mount slave cylinder taking station on a table in his garage. I asked; the peripheral port engine was under somebody's coffee table as living room art.
Mr. Hanover imparted a lot of practical wisdom on nopistons over the years.

or do you know anyone that has one.
Can you contact me on ryanbell858@gmail.com
