I just learned that the 2004 and later V8 4Runners came with the load-distributing hitch that upped the towing capacity to 7000 pounds. My 2003 has a rating of 5000 pounds. Looks like I'm on the lookout for a factory tow hitch from one of the later cars.
I came here expecting complaints about trying to tow with a V6, and discovering 5th gear was impossible.
I'd be pretty nervous about transmission temps towing 7000 pounds with a 4 runner.
I'm really just trying to get it as overbuilt as I can for towing less weight. I figure having added capacity in there will be a good thing. Plus, I'm going to be running dual transmission coolers, because driving on sand is hard enough on the transmission.
Hmm,my '03 V8 has the big boy factory hitch c/w with factory mounted 5 pin connector and trailer brake wiring.
Is it a hitch? Some of the Toyota trucks don't have a separate hitch, the rear lateral in the frame IS the "receiver".
Sort of like how some of them don't have removable trans crossmembers.
It was just a "tow package" option. The good news is all the nutserts are in the frame already! And the wiring is all there too, just need to pigtail and brake controller up at the dash.
