VW TDI wagon. I've read numerous stories about guys getting MPG in the hi-30's to low-40's towing trailers about that size. Manuals are common (and would be preferred).

I'm not sure I'd call Forester mileage "ok". Non-turbos don't get much better (if any) mileage. 22mpg kind sucks, when there are plenty of cars he could choose that will average 30+
Also, headgaskets.
