While you guys were at the Challenge.......
I ran The 2008 Circuits Maximus, which was a truly keen track day event.
The club, Connecticut Autocross and Rally Club ( ~C.A.R.T.~) runs this event once a year. We got to run at all three of the normal Pocono road courses, North, South and East. We had basically three run groups so you could run on track all day long, which I mostly did. I burned about 25 gallons of gas on track. After a while, I got pretty good at throwing the old Escort into the Turn 1 on North course at about 6000 rpm in 4th.....great fun! We also had a time trail and relay race. The relay race had five drivers (and cars) on each team with five teams. I was on "Team Fiero" which only had one actual Fiero on it. Our team won. We each got a neat baseball cap with "Relay Winner" on it....plus bragging rights.
I had originally intended my car to run the $2007 Challenge (I built it for well under $1000). I was partly inspired by three of my students, who built a DSM and did pretty well in the $2004 event. But pulling 2000 miles (round trip), running the event and rushing back (as well as taking off three days of work) is more than my post-middle age body can stand. But I'm still glad I built the car. I ran it in three club races last year (including a 4-Hour) and have already run it in four events this year (plus a 4 Hour coming up in Nov).
