Anyone done this? Wondering if its simple or a headache considering the AWD nature of it.
I've done this job on a 9C1 Caprice, so I have a good idea what has to happen.
Can it be done with simple tools? I'd need to know before I commit to this job for a friend.
I did upper and lowers on my 03 Ford truck with basic tools. Toughest part was pressing them out and the new ones in. First side took way longer than it should because I couldn't figure out what to unbolt and what to leave in place. We are talking big bolts here. Second side went much quicker. The inspection station that failed my truck wanted $400 labor to change them out plus the marked up price on the parts.
Not that bad. My explorer seemed to like to eat them every 30-50K Just a fair amount of stuff to take apart. Do the lower while you have it apart and inspect the half shaft as well and replace if needed.
Can't do the lowers let. Person paying for this is broke (like broke enough to have me do it.)
Do the uppers press in, or do you shear the rivets, pop out the old ones and bolt in new ones?

Yes you can! Upper control arm. Its just ??? 3 bolts. You will need an Alignment Cam Bolt Kit. If it has never had an alignment. The lower not so fun :( I can do ford frontend work in my sleep. If you find you need help just call me.
in my 97 2wd, the uppers require replacement of the entire upper arm. Did upper and lowers in a weekend with a large C-clamp style press from HF. wasn't TOO bad, just a lot of stuff to take apart. Probably worse on 4wd.
Yes, the whole UCA is replaced with the upper ball joint.
To the best of my knowledge, a 99.
What's the cheapest place to get the joints from. I'm thinking RockAuto as PepVanceZone is $75 +.
