Is this OK? The 5 piece welded steering arm in this kit.

I am trying to work around a steering arm length issue and saw this and it goes against everything I have been told.

Assuming the welds are of good quality I see nothing wrong here.

That's exactly the setup MG used for years on their cars.

Lets try this again Photobucket

To most folk the idea of modifying, cutting, welding steering components is equal to suicide. But yeah this looks stout and totally workable.

I will look into the MG bits to see how they are made.

Some nice looking hardware. What's the application?

Interesting... looks a bit like an aftermarket hub assembly for a Spitfire /GT6/Lotus.

Ask them if they magnaflux the arms after they are welded. If so the the bits will probably bend before the welds break. Properly done, welds are usually as strong or stronger than the base metal.

I have no idea what this kit is for or who makes it. I simply found it in this crazy/awesome swedish build thread

My interest stems from the fact that I am in the parts collection/planning/string computer stages of replacing the transverse leaf spring on the front of my 850 with a double wishbone/coilover setup. I picked up some Fiat 124 front uprights that would be perfect if the bolt on steering arm was half of its length. My first thought was cut and weld but that was met with cries that instant death would ensue, california would fall into the ocean and whatever political party I feared most would rise to power.

The Fiat 850 kingpin housing with its short arm and the 124 arm held up for reference. Photobucket

I shudder to think how slow the steering would be with the 124 arm.

Not knowing the metalurgy I wouldn't modify the 124 arm, I'd find a hunk of 1" steel plate and whittle a new arm out of it. Couple of days with a saw and grinder and you'll have a thing of beauty.

That 124 arm looks beefy enough in the area where the steering link would go, to just cut it off, grind the edges smooth, drill a new hole, spotface, and ream a new taper. No welding required.

The TR7/8 steering arm looks like it would fall somewhere in between those, but there are a ton of variables. You have to account for bolt hole diameters, and spacing. I would just start from scratch and make something up out of steel and pipe. There isn't a tremendous amount of force there. Circle track, off roaders, and prod racers make this kind of stuff all the time. I would love to know where that kit came from. If that is available, just imagine what else the manufacturer has to offer.
