I've been looking for an M3 V8 to see if I can afford one for a project I have in mind and I can't find used Bimmer engines anywhere. It seems all I find are Japanese engines. Where do you guys find the used Bimmer engines?

Rumour has it, a local high end "Pre-loved" dealer has a brand new but rear ended and totalled M3 around back with the drivetrain for sale.

I heard this from the boyfriend of the owner's daughter. He has been known to be somewhat full of E36 M3 at times though but it still might be worth a look.

It's in central NC and called Madsen Motors. http://www.madsenmotors.com/

I called Madsen and they say it's not them. Dang it!

Let me see if I can get a hold of the guy that told me this, maybe I can find you some better info.

I'd think the M3s V8 would definitely be hard to find... What about using the previous-gen M5's V8? It's heavier, but it makes similar HP.

That's what I was thinking.

I think the E90/2 M3 is just too new and exclusive.

Have any clues as to what the project might be? Sounds awesome!!

Or any of the 4.4 or 4.8s from the E65/66 7 series, or the same motors out of the X5 if you want a big BMW V8. Not the screamer that the M3 motor is but lovely motors all the same.

The M3 V8 has a ton of electronics that you'd have to transplant along with the engine. I've seen a couple engine swaps using the 4 liter V8 out of an e34 5 series that worked out pretty well, it's no M3 but it's still around 280hp.

Big question: What's this project you have in mind?

The wife looking at M3s a little while ago just got me to thinking more and more about that engine. It's supposed to be the smallest and lightest production V8 in the world so I was looking at my S2000 and thinking it deserved an engine like that.

A friend has the need for a new motor so I thought I might sell him mine and then replace mine with the M3 motor. I need to check relative weights and sizes, but I'm thinking the heavier M5 motor might not be as good as an LSx motor simply due to price. But then there's the torque of the big American V8 - not good in my opinion.

I really like the powerband on the M3 motor.

That sounds awesome.

I've never diven an M3 so I don't know what the powerband is like.

What about a Hayabusa V8? Size and fitment would be ideal. Also, I'd imagine it would be easier to set up than dealing with the Bimmer's electronics.

The only thing I can think of that you might (and I definitely mean MIGHT) want to replace the s2000 motor with is a rotary...

Although, the 'busa V8 sounds like a good option...

The Busa V8 is what - $30,000?

I know the Bimmer V8 will be a little heavier than the S motor, but hopefully just a little. Electronics are a fact of life so I'll have to transplant the key/transponder, ecu and wire in a few of the sensors, but shouldn't be anything too hard.

The M3 engine makes it's power further up the powerband than does an LSx so it would upset the chassis less. http://www.dragtimes.com/2008-BMW-M3-Dyno-Results-Graphs-15189.html

This is just one of those things that the timing is right to do. If for some reason I can't find an engine or I don't sell my engine to a friend I'll put the project on the back burner until I do find an engine.

I'm thinking a 6 speed and not the paddle shifter simply due to electronics, probably price, and the fact that it is one less thing to visually give away that there's not an S motor under the hood.

I just sent you a message. I forgot to mention price. The guy seems to think it'll be about $10 grand.

More than I thought, but cheaper than a new car.
