Has anyone run at  the Utah salt flats?

Im curious if there is some sort of amateur class where you can run your caged car.

Bucketlist kind of thing

They are almost all  amateurs.  Some are on very tiny budgets.  You do have to conform to their rules with regard roll cages,  seat belts, etc.

But they will find a class for you.  Or you can go on line and read the rules yourself.

Since they are all amateurs you'll find them extremely helpful, willing to share advice, tools, and even help.

Wear plenty of sunscreen,  even your neck will burn from sun reflected off the salt. Bring a lot of water, and shade.

George Poteet set a new record yesterday with his big block Chevy powered Speed Demon streamliner: 470.733 mph!

This http://www.scta-bni.org/ is the organization that the team I worked with raced under.  Good group of people.

Everyone is an amateur- there are no prizes for setting records.  And there are classes for every car and every prep style- it's a matter of finding what class your car fits into, and then building the safety structure around that.

Our team pushed an Alfa to 232 mph- 10 years after setting them, our car still holds them (BGMS and BFMS).

It's INCREDBILY addicting, so you know- it's the ultimate challenge against yourself.

Given the access to the pits and what not- it's also one of the best car shows of all time- especially the first weekend.  That's when most of the SCTA-BNI club comes up from California to race, help, and spectate.  So the variety of cars is amazing.

I ran my car at Maxton with the ECTA but never ran on the salt. However, all the land speed racers use the same forum where you can get all the answers. http://www.landracing.com/forum/index.php

I stopped with family during a visit (a little over two hours from my house, as I recall). You can just drive out there; entrance is free.  Obviously participating in an event fulfills more of a bucket list, but if you want to head out and start driving the surface to see what it feels like, it is a public area.

You'll need to log in to post.
