It's a fox chassis, so pretty much all the mustang goodies bolt on and would be much cooler. Plus, back doors are nice if you want to use the back seat.
In this vein, plucked from the hotlink thread.
Fairmont wagon + a few mustang parts...
Sounds like you need my XR4Ti that I really need to pass on to an owner that would actually use it.

I agree. I just bought an 06 mustang to run in csm this year. Although I also have a V8 Volvo, so I can also recommend going that route.

I like it already. But then I'm biased... it's just like the '89 I bought new. If it's a solid running car with suspension mods, that's probably a pretty good price.

If that's as straight in real life as it looks in the picture that's a good deal. 5 lug / 4 wheel discs already in place and looks a bit lower than stock. I like it!

The friend who has it preps at race cars for a living and is a life long Mustang guy. It's really nice.
That's a nice looking 5.0 but it's older and even if the interior is as nice as the outside, I find that I like my creature comforts more and more, so for anything I'd drive besides on the track Id want newer, like Racebrick and Racing Computers were saying.
In reply to P3PPY :
Keep in mind my tow vehicle is a 33yr old van and I vintage race.........I like old cars.
This would be occasional track day, autocross and Friday car.

Haha never have I given such an irrelevant opinion then :)
Isn't this exactly what SCCA is trying to do with the Club Spec Mustangs? You could build one of those and probably get all your money out when it comes time to sell. I'm a believer in building cars to an established spec or series if at all possible.
In reply to ShinnyGroove (Forum Supporter) :
True but I want something to play with realtively cheap and the friend who built it does really good work
For your requirements, I think it's Really really hard to beat an early s197 these days. Well sorted ones are around 8k and rougher ones are available for 5-6k (at least near me--mid Atlantic) .

S197 in our opinion is the place to start
YRMV
The following is from an article written by Billy Johnson regarding the stiffness of the s197.

I do really like that but I think I want to have a street car
OK, I get the S197 vs Fox Body critiques, there's no question the S197 benefits from close to 20 years of development. I think that white one you've shown would be a great street car and I'm betting your buddy has done plenty of improvements already. Maybe it's where I'm located but we're not seeing anything V8 S197 around here for under $10K unless it has over 150 K on it and those would be older 4.6 cars.
I've had my 97 mustang for over 20 years at this point.
Fox
S197
In the end it's what you want. The fox seems to tickle you. I don't know that you are all about competitive autocross and time trial. If you are, the club spec thing does have a VERY powerful call

If I wanted to be competitive at autocross I would keep the F500.
This car is strictly for fun and you are correct I do like the Fox body.
As for time trials; my Datsun ends up in the unlimited class so I don't care about that either.
