The early K-jet mechanical fuel injection systems were fussy but once Bosch got the L-jetronic system going is was easy money. I had Volvos with both and was glad to se the K-jet go away.

Europeans/Asians have figured out that they can get good mileage with small motors and still get decent performance by running shorter ratios and higher revs. My wife's last car was an E30 318iC. It was the last E30 and had the M42 4-cylinder that was used in the E36/Z3 vehicles. At 80MPH it was turning nearly 4 grand but it still got 30MPG and was running like a champ with we sold it with 200k miles. Her current car is an E46 330CiC. It weighs about 7-800lbs more than the old car and turns 3300rpm at 80MPH and still gets 28mpg.

Corvette is the best example of going the other way. Their 6 speed manual has two overdrives and the higher one is something like .6 so it's running around 1500rpm at 70mph. It gets mileage in the 20's on the highway with a stroker small block.
