Carli started getting a random clunk at 35-45mph, after a start. Usually after warm, sometimes it would do it once and sometimes 3-4 times evenly spaced before stopping. (2007 snaab 9-7x trailblazer variant)

I have it up on ramps with the diff cover off. Fluid is stinky, black, and very thin, like engine oil thin. It was quite warm when i pulled the cover and it had sat for 3 hours since she came home from work. When you stir it, it turns shiny like black chrome.

Diff screwed? What do i look for? Seems an excessive amount of pinion turn required to get the axles moving

Shiny like metal flakes?

Excessive gear wear, pinion slop. Does that year have the rear axle with powerlite embossed on the side? We see alot of those full of metal shavings.

The rear diff recomends 75w90 full synthetic so it will be thinner feeling then 80w90.

Sounds like a smoked bearing cooked the diff oil.

The running joke here is they say powerlite because they can only handle light power. Still E36 M3ty but it sounds like rebuild time. You could try fresh fluid as a short term bandaid fix.
