First off: driver is OK. Brake failure was the cause of accident.

This video is being heavily discussed in another group I am in and I figured I would share here. Somewhat alarming video that reinforces the idea that safety equipment is only as good as the weakest link.

The core cause of the failure is being blamed on a counterfeit Sabelt harness but there are a few other not-so-good things other people noticed: loose belts, submarining because of 4-point harness, seat with pads to make the driver taller, and belts connected somewhere other than a harness bar.

It's not an easy video to watch after the impact.

Interestingly, I can't find any regs or recommendations by safety groups or by harness manufacturers that say you shouldn't attach shoulder belts by clips. You can't have both of them attached to a single point, but two eye-bolts seem to be acceptable everywhere. If anyone can find info that says otherwise, I'd be interested to see it.

Having the shoulder belts come free is the biggest problem. The clip almost looks like it's made of aluminum in the one picture I've seen of it.

Picture of the floor pan and belt.

It was a hard hit for sure. I'm very glad the driver is mostly alright.

Except I see the 5 and 6 points attached under the seat in the picture.

Scary.  For sure, I'm not taking my GTV on the track with the 20 year old belts on it (not that it was in the works- just that the belts are old).  Terrifying.

Looking at that closer- it's hard to criticize his set up- it's like many others out there- 6 points (look, they are all there), and many have them mounted in the rear where the seat belt shoulder harness for the rear seats would mount, too.  Probably the lap belt is mounted in the same stock locations (which are strong as heck)- and the anti sub belt did it's job.  Somehow that clip in failed.

As for the accident- man, it would be "cool" to remind him to take his hands off the wheel when he's going to crash- but I'm pretty sure his instincts told him to brace for impact.  Again, without being there, I have no idea how I would react.

It's good to hear he's ok.

Man, I've always considered, with a shifty eye, knock off seats for the lumbar support and price...

I dont think I will anymore

I was at an autocross last year and there was a guy there in a CAM-T 1977 Trans Am, and he asked for an instructor because he'd been off course the first 2 runs and wasn't sure where. So I jumped in and buckle up and he has those E36 M3ty NRG seats. Three quarters through the run, he punched it out of the one corner and the back of the seat broke off and and nearly dumped me in the back seat. I had a hold of the dashboard grab bar and door panel already, so I just held on and let him finish out the run. As we pulled back into the grid I showed him the seat and said "Get rid of these things before you get killed." Two runs later, his driver's seat did the same exact thing. And they were brand new.

In reply to NickD :

The scary part is that there's knock offs of NRG out there! (ie - those aren't even the bottom rung yet!)
