Given the fact that the odometer gear fails routinely on these cars, I'd look for service records to back up a low mileage claim.

Someone with the proper scanner should be able to pull the true mileage from the OBDII port. My car has a 700 mile discrepancy, which is how long it took me to replace the gear. However, it is entirely possible to drive the car for years before fixing the gear and show far fewer miles than actual.

BTW, '96 and (I think '97) are the only two years that it is impossible to turn off the Service Interval idiot light without the right scanner. Bulb removal is routine, however
