Friend enlisted my help since I had a T5 c30. But I didn't know what to tell him about the 2.4i in a 2008 s40 he was looking at. Are we looking at a tad more reliablilty than the T5 since it has less parts? What's it gonna be like taking these from 150k - 250k, considering it had regular maintenance. He doesnt like turbo whine which my c30 had. How much better gass mileage? Its a manual 2.4i BTW.
By all reports I got when I almost bought a similar car, the gas mileage is improved but not by a very extreme amount. It should be a good, reliable car as long as it gets/has had regular timing belt, water pump and PCV system servicing. Really they aren't that much less complex than the turbos though.

Right, ok. What did you end up buying? Wish carfax said more about what maintenance, will have to see receipts. Is the timing belt and water pump/pcv system a hard mileage amount before replacing (like bmws?)?
In reply to Coldsnap:
I ended up buying a BMW. Timing belt is a hard mileage replacement interval on every car that has one, but on Volvos the PCV is as well. The water pump is more of a "while you're in there" thing when you do the timing belt. IIRC with Volvos you want to make sure all three are done every 100k.

ok, cool. So when shopping in the 100k+ mile it would probably be a good idea to have the pre purchase mechanic check if the timing belt and PCV has been done.
Whew, friend paid a volvo dealerhsip to look at a clean 2004 with 150k miles they came back with :
Flame trap and hoses.
Right front inner cv boot leaking grease.
alternator and ac belt cracked and worn out.
taillight bulb out.
definately need software update.
timing belt and water pump was not done, no stickers, markings in book,
oil leak coming in from the belt cover
