I need help. I'm going crazy trying to get the timing done on my 02 V70.

I have been to all the Volvo sites and they just don't show what I need. This is what I compleated so far. Replaced tensioner and belt Put back together aligning all timing marks. But the car still runs rough. Re check marks Re adjust, check by rotating engine by hand. Runs even worse.

Does anyone have a picture or a proper digram of the timing alignment for this car. 2.4 liter inline 5 non turbo vin 61 thanks Tom

Maybe your timing was right but you have another problem like low compression on one cylinder? Did you change the belt because the timing belt broke? If so, you definitely have bent valves. In my experience, the crank gear is the hard one to get right, the cams are easy to see/set.

I was just replacing the belt We just bought the car and the service records showed the timing belt was last done 150k or so When I checked the belt it was showing singhs of wear The car ran like a top before I took it apart.

Did you line the crank pully up with the marks for it, or just the timming marks on the cam pulleys?

They are sometimes difficult to keep the cam pulleys from moving a tooth or two, when you release the "grenade" pin on the hydraulic tensioner. There's a cam locking tool most of the online Volvo parts places sell for around $40, but there's plenty of examples of DIY cam locking tools on the forums.

Personally I've never used the locking tool, and never had a problem (knocks on wood).

I got it figured out. I'm the idiot. Switched the spark plug wires on 1and2 Now she peers like a kitten.

1 and 2? I'd understand 2 & 3... wait '02 it's COP right?

Glad you got it figured out. On mine, each cylinder is labeled 1-5 with a paint pen on the cam cover (under the plug/wire cover) and each post on my distributor is also labeled 1-5. I've been down that road before.
