Will Pelosi still be in power under the Obama administration? Probably a stupid question but I'm not sure.

In reply to triumph7: I'm pretty liberal....... and even I hate Pelosi. Her ability to climb to the higher reaches of power is fueled by her husband's willingness to open up his checkbook to any Democrat that he thinks can help his wife. Hell, Pelosi makes Boxer look almost reasonable! that said, your post smells like the right wing equivalent of Pelosi, so let's scale it back a bit, OK?

If you look at California, which has had cash for clunkers program in place for years, there's not been some big destruction of desireable cars. I daresay that a scenario that I've seen more is someone chopping up three restorable parts cars to make one good one. Perhaps redneck driveways aren't as conjested as in the past, but that's not all bad. The difference in polution production between a late-model car and a 1980 Fairmount with bad rings is staggering.

I don't believe in nanny states, high taxes or welfare for the lazy, but we may be getting our panties a bit wadded on this one.

Yes, she will remain speaker of the house until either the Democrats lose their majority of the seats or the people of her district vote her out of office.

Both Democrats and Republicans get payoffs in the form of campaign contributions from Banks, Insurance Companies and all sorts of other businesses that benefit wihenever somebody trades in their old clunker on a $40,000 SUV. I don't think this is a partisan issue, and if it's socialism, it's corporate socialism.

Besides, any true red socialist worth his salt wants you to drive a 30 year old Trabant, not a brand new Chevy Suburban.

Da, is Trabant we want. I for one, welcome our new socialist overlords!

Looks like 'Comrade Obama' likes big American V8s.

When she reads this I just want to let her know that I haven't received my free government Trabant yet.

Trabant: It pollutes heavily when it's running, and it can't be recycled either so it pollutes when it's dead.

From what I'm told, they're made of something called Shperplat which is basically anything resinous and anything fiberlike. Kind of ghetto-fied fiberglass. One week it's tablecloths and wood glue, next week maybe it's leftover shirt cuttings and industrial epoxy?

Once the Federal Government completes its takeover of General Motors and Chrysler and makes Michael Moore the CEO of the combined company, they will then convert all production to Government Approved Hybrid Tribants with bodies made from fiberglass resin, chicken wire and the ground up remains of corporate jets, yachts and golf carts aquired cheaply from bankruptcy sales of Wall Street Firms and Private Country Clubs. All other vehicles will be banned from public highways.

Triumph, I agree there is a bit of turbulence ahead and our current "gov't" is clearly inept. But seriously...Chill dude...seriously.

I think we need to look at the idea of a stimulus bonus to those who do purchase a new detroit offering. Say, a Govt rebate of 15% of the purchase price. Its uncle sams way of giving to the automakers/NADA what they gave (moronically) to the banks. Plus, no one has to crush their ignition-challenged DeLorean or half assembled Grand National

This keeps bobbing to the surface. A few years back, New Jersey passed a 'clunker bill' aimed at getting old worn out crap off the roads. The problem: an old 4 door Impala just happens to contain many useful items (SBC, Powerglide etc) for the guy restoring an old Camaro and the average yahoo has no idea so off to the crusher it goes. The supply of donor cars for projects 1) went out of sight price wise 2) started to dry up. The laws of supply and demand once again.

Of course, the newer computerized stuff can be so expensive to fix (remember the Subaru cataytic converter thread recently?) that they can be unuseable yet too new to qualify as a 'clunker'.

As usual, the Democrats have decided they know best and the Nanny State will screw us again.

Exactly, then add the fact that it won't create more sales as clunker drivers can't afford a $25K car nor do they want a large debt in the current economic climate, what is the point?

Just found out about this today. Yes it's not the first time that this sort of thing has surfaced. We must continue to let the congress and state gov's know that we don't agree with this sort of thing.

Senator Dianne Feinstien of California and

Senator Susan Collins of Maine are pushing this measure.

They say anything with less than 18mpg is the target. According to fuel economy.gov, most anything 1985 or newer under the revised 2008 testing standards gets at least 18mpg! The only thing I could find that didn't make the cut were trucks and a few big sedans. The US big cars would only miss by 1mpg! The real pigs were the large cars from Europe. But there are so few of them it really doesn't matter.

The real target? cars from the 60's and 70's. We know that there so few left that they are not an issue. But the politicians in CA see them all the time and can't get off the subject. They don't understand that most of them are gone except the few out west!
