Looking at North-South mounted VR6 for RWD swap.
(Yes, I know they are heavy, etc.)
Did some Web searching, found lot's of chatter, not much meat.
The tranny seems to be the sticking point.
One guy had mated a Toyota W gearbox (with some bellhousing surgery), but the ACVW guys chased him away.
Other than 944 (don't want a torque tube setup, no room for a transaxle), does anything bolt up?
I'm not afraid to fab something, but why re-invent the wheel?

I seem to recall 034 motorsports making an adapter to Bolt one to an Audi Quattro setup. I've heard that this adapter will also mate to a 924 drivetrain, but you're still left with a torque tube. Not sure how much help that is but it's all I've got

Not really sure why you would do this other than having a spare engine lying about. But like anything it can be done, just begs the question to if you should of not. I mean there are better options that have been done before.

Granted, something with more power bolted to a 944, 968, etc. rear transmission, could be fun, and somewhat balanced on the road as well, which is good.

I have not looked into it enough to be a resource, however the early Boxster 5-speed is nearly identical to the one in a B5 Passat/A4. By inference, you could probably bolt a VR to it in case you wanted to go mid-engine.

I missed the "R" in "VR6" and was totally confused reading the initial post. Weren't early versions of the Passat rwd with shared Audi parts?

Sounds like a custom bellhousing is in my future.
Lucky for me, DIY foundry is another hobby ;)

Resurrecting an ancient thread.   I'm a 3.6 VR6 fanboy as many of you know and now I'm facing down an engine swap in my NA Miata.  I love the sound and 280-300 hp should be plenty to motivate my little Mazda around with authority.

Is it possible?

In reply to KyAllroad (Jeremy) (Forum Supporter) :

A few years back I saw a Miata for sale that had a turbo VR6 mated to a Turbo II RX7 transmission. And it wasn't somebody's aborted project that was a non-running pile of parts. It was a complete running driving car that had made 275hp to the tires

In fact I made a thread about that car and you commented on it. The photos are gone sadly.

I remember reading that VR5/6 have the same bolt pattern as the 1.8/2.0/2.5 and 4cyl TDI. That opens you up to a bunch of good transmission adapters if what I said is true.

I've moved on from VR6 to swapping a Honda L15B7 into my Spitfire.
But still with similar issues finding a RWD solution.

Current approach uses a BMW Getrag from 323i, which has an integral bellhousing (as inspired by the KMiata site)
A flat adaptor plate can do the job, thickness determining the alignment of the BMW shaft splines with the clutch disk splines.
The Honda disk and BMW disk are both 230 mm, and the BMW shaft is smaller than the Honda, so a custom bushing can be used.
3D scans of Honda rear and BMW face, some CAD magic, clocking the two bolt/bushing patterns to avoid collisions, some custom NC machining, and Voila! a custom adaptor plate is born.

I'm sure that reality will be a bit more challenging, but I have the motor, the transmission, a quote for 3D scanning, and an offer
to do the NC machining, once the file is ready.

That's almost correct. The vr6 and vr5 in Europe use the same bolt pattern. The i5 in North America and all the 4 cylinder vw water cooled motors share another.

To the OP there is an s10 kicking around the web with a turbo vr6...try doing some Google foo with that.

You'll need to log in to post.
