Anyone know where it is? Found out what my check engine light is and a quick web search turned up nothing

I presume its either in line with the speedo cable, or screwed into the trans where the speedo cable would be. 84 must still have a cable drive speedo, I'd imagine...

Yep, tailcone of the transmission, drivers side. Cable attaches to it IIRC.

Probably be in the gauge cluster like every other GM from that time period.

Oh, that's right. Those were the older style clusters that the cable drives them. I was thinking of Dad's 91 9C1.

Probably a lime green plastic box hooked into the back of the speedo. They're easy to see usually as the color stands out amongst the dust and debris that inevitably accumulates behind the dash.

Yep, box on the speedo. Had to clean the one on my old 84.

I don't think they actually ever go bad, the optical sensor just gets dirty..
