The wife's 2015 MK7 GTI gave us the gift of its first code: P2681 Engine Coolant Bypass Valve Control / Open.  75K miles, no problems to this point- chews a small amount of coolant (top up 1x/year).  No overheating, no problems with the heater... everything works normally.

The internet has not yielded what I would call any firm information on what this code actually means. Some dudes say they just top up coolant and it goes away. I've done that a couple times, and cleared the code with my scanner, but nothing doing- comes right back and it is a "permanent" code, whatever that means.

I have an email in to FCP Euro to see if they have any insight. They have a DIY on water pump replacement that came up in my search, but I couldn't figure out what caused it to hit. I suspect that's how I will be spending my days off next week, as they claim the pumps only last about 50k. Funny, I didn't see that in the brochure when I bought the car.

So- anyone have any insight or experience? I'd love for this to be simple, but I'm suspecting it will not be.  Thank you in advance.

Can you get your hands on a factory manual? The causes of the code are probably laid out in excruciating detail.

Hopefully- I asked my son to check with his auto shop teacher for access to their shop manual diagnostics.
