Anybody have any ideas for a replacement gasket for the sunroof of a 1986 vw golf gti? I'm on JC Whitney now, and the salesperson isn't seeing anything that may work.

Thanks, Will

What exactly is going on, they leak quite a bit even when new. The sunroof track is supposed to catch the water and divert it down the a/c pillar tubes. If you're getting water one is probably clogged or disconnected.

The car leaks water into the floor behind the drivers seat when it rains. You can see it coming from one corner of the sunroof area. Where are the a/c pillar tubes and how would I go about unclogging them? Coat hanger?

No, no coat hanger!!! It's very rare to have a bad sunroof weatherstrip, usually it's the drain tubes plugged with leaf debris and/or mold.

The front tubes are easily visible with the roof open, look in the corners of the 'halo' around the track. You'll see a hole approx 3/8", use a puff of compressed air from the top side.

The rear ones are a bit tougher, they go through the 'D' pillar and come out at the rocker. If you jack up the car you can usually see them sticking out. Like this:

Puff them with compressed air also, but from the bottom. If you can't see the tubes from underneath that means they end inside the rocker and aren't easily accessible from below. That means you'd need to lower the rear of the headliner and look for the same type tubes as the front.

You'll need to log in to post.
