Hey guys,

At work we have a few of these odd-ball gensets that use either a 5 or 6 cylinder Audi/VW diesel engine mounted on its end to run a generator. The one we are working on currently due to a catastrophic failure of an aftermarket fan shaft assemby last year needs more parts than we initially anticipated. Turns out there is a small idler pulley down near the crank pulley for the timing belt that has been damaged, and needs replacement. We need to figure out what engine it is so we can order the proper pulley, possibly timing belt, etc, and know the procedure to replace these parts.

It is a 5-cylinder turbo diesel engine with Audi marked on the valve cover. I was able to get some numbers off the block, and they are as follows:

046 103 071

    B

103 011

Anyone able to point me in a direction as to what this engine is,and maybe even tell me how to line up the pulleys to re-install the timing belt? I ask only because we don't see a mark on the cam pulley. Also the crank pulley looks to be maybe two pieces(timing belt pulley, and accesory drive ribbed pulley), but has one really large bolt holding it in place. I know you guys can help me because you are the best!!!

Thanks,

Chris

I don't know anything about diseasals, but I started here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_North_American_Volkswagen_engines

Then poked around here:

http://forums.dieselpowermag.com/

...and here:

I don't know any applications for that motor so it's harder to look up.

Is this it?

I suspect you won't find a lot of marks that mean much of anything, especially if you've had the pulleys off. My limited experience is that the pulleys are tapered, without keys, and you lock the engine down, out the belt on, then tighten the pulley bolts.

Thats from a number of years ago, like the 80's.

Does it have a mechanical pump, driven off the back of the cam? That would date it back then, I think.

Call these guys http://www.partsplaceinc.com/

Their phone guys are very helpful and they deal in stationary engines too. At least according to their catalog. I have only bought Unstationary engine parts.

You'll need to log in to post.
