The tube that's typically welded to exhaust parts to hang them from the frame by the little rubber hangers is solid. Why? They don't need to be that strong by a long shot. I figure if I go from solid to hollow it will at least offset the weight of the exhaust wrap. Any reason this won't work? Would a typical exhaust shop have any problem bending the hollow tube?
These guys have figured it out (see video description):

Edit: Looks like the Evo X factory exhaust also has these.
Edit2: And they have a breakage problem...
Good question, but I don't think they weigh all that much compared to the weight of the exhaust tubing, mufflers, clamps, rubber hangers, etc.
Bending the tubing will be more difficult, certainly without crushing the tubing or making it potentially weaker.
On some cars, I've seen brackets of flat steel that were clamped or welded to the exhaust that holds the rubber mounts. It seems like it could be potentially lighter with some work with a hole saw.

My RX8 has hollow mount tubes also.
Hmm tempting...think I'm gonna try it. Gotta check if my mount tubes are 1/2" or 3/8" and get some hollow stainless pipe.
my 318ti had hollow tubes that were welded to the exhaust that were used to hold it to the mounts.
Exhaust shops I have delt with used the more is better approach to laying a weld. Not sure any of the guys would have been able to weld thinwall tubing without blowing holes in it.
Here's a simple homemade 18ga hanger bracket, uses off the shelf Mazda rubber. The design allows plenty of flex to prevent cracking, also allows plenty of air circulation to keep heat away from the rubber. Easy to make too...

Thread resurrection: anyone familiar with tubing specs and/or exhaust fabrication want to recommend something with 1/2" OD?
Order tubing by OD. Pipe by ID. Were I to drop by the steel yard I would ask them what they have in 1/2" thin wall tube. 16ga would be a bit over $1 a foot.
1/4" pipe is 0.540" OD but will be heavier wall than what you need and need the scale ground off before welding.
Calling around now, biggest place that stocks this kind of thing has nothing!

in my case, much bigger weight savings if driver skips a few milkshakes now and then. tube hangars might save a few ounces. a few less shakes could shave off 10 lbs
