This is not my car, no affiliation, I just spotted it on e-Bay.

What's the deal with these tail lights? Is it just some bad customization or something else?

I would guess that the tail lights are just the owners "personal enhancements" like the plywood interior door skins seem to be on that car as well.

Here is a more "period correct" '73 TR-6

Oh, wow. While I can't say I hate the look, I can't imagine what would posses someone to go to that much trouble to achieve it.

You must remember that being a '73, this TR-6 lives through the era of Corvette Summer.
In retrospect, I think you comment above could equally be applied to this Corvette.

One of the typical rust spots for TR-6s is the upper rear tailight panel. I could see doing this sort of mod if the rear valance was rusted, or damaged. The fact that the car is a Northern car, and the interior has been "customized" would lead me to think there may be some uglyness hiding under that pretty paint.

the tail light treatment doesn't look horrible though

Unfortunately, there have been a few people who have performed similar butchery on Jensen Healeys. Looks every bit as bad.

"Classic beauty, unexcelled craftsmanship, and dignified prestige. Just three of the reasons why the Triumph was not only the most outstanding motorcar of that time, but still a genuinely wise investment today."

Thats laying it on a little thick. Nice car, though. (2d TR).

The thing that gets me is that the tail light panel doesn't look like a one-off piece.

Corvette lights make it faster.

What happens when inexpensive cars reach the end of the line, as far as owners with money AND taste.

Having said that, I am almost curious to see if this looks better in person....dark blue paint and less than ideal ligting can hide a myriad of sins.

If you're ever passing through Effingham, IL you really need to stop by Mid America & look at their vette collection - including the Corvette Summer & Deathrace 2000 cars....oh, and a whole bunch of really sweet race vettes.
