I have purchased a RX-7 with a welded in cage. My memory tells me that the rules say that a competitor must use a bolt in cage only. Am I mistaken? Will it be the same this year? I would like to compete.

I could be wrong...
But i think a weld in cage is legal, you just have to count it in budget. However, since your car came with it, then it's legal and shouldn't cost any additional.
The bolt in cage thing comes as a "safety" requirement if your car goes fast enough in the drags. At that point, you don't have to count it in budget.
I'm sure AngryCorvair or Pat or someone will check me.

This is correct
If it already came with it in the purchase, there is no budget hit. That rule only applies if you are putting one in, which I believe the bar/cage rules are semi-asisine as currently written.
I believe it was free if it was necessary for the drag strip portion. Also free if already done when purchased. Otherwise, I was thinking they all were budget hits.

Incorrect
I thought all saftey gear was challenge budget free starting last year or something. . . . i suppose a cage is halfway accross the line of safety/performance. . . i admit i need to read all the actual rules still
Cage is "free" as long as it doesn't affect the structural rigidity of the car, which can help it in the auto-x... or in this case, free cause it was already in the car.

A caged RX-7 for $900?? Sounds like a sweet deal! I'd love to see more details. Do you have a build thread anywhere?
A welded in 5 point bar does not hit budget. More than 5 points welded hits budget. A bolt in cage is does not hit budget, but if I remember correctly, there was a limit to the number of points.
If any bar/cage, welded or bolted, is on the car when you bought it, you only need to budget the purchase price of the car since you bought the bar/cage and everything else that was on the car when you bought the car.
Rule from last year's event on the topic:
H) Roll bars and roll cages may be added. Roll cages must be bolted (not welded) into the automobile and contained within the passenger/driver compartment. Roll bars may be welded in. A roll cage has more than five attachment points (but no more than eight) to the body or frame. Roll bars and roll cages must be padded within 6 inches of the occupants’ heads with SFI-spec high-density padding. Helmets must be worn in cars with roll bars or roll cages. Any additional bars and attachment points added to the roll bar or roll cage, or extending the bar or cage outside of the passenger compartment to the suspension pickup points, will negate this allowance and make the entire cage count toward the budget.
That said, you're in the clear regardless, as others have stated above, because you bought the car with the cage already installed.
I'm sure this might be on the interwebs somewhere, but i'd rather ask it here.
Difference between a roll bar and a roll cage as seen by the rules?
Bar to cage in the real world is the "halo" bar with the corresponding support bars around the a-pillars to the floor.

This is the project thread that logdog started. I have not started one yet as I have done very little to the car since I bought it from logdog.
You'll need to log in to post.
