Well apparently at work I have become "that guy" that people bring car stuff too. Mission Accomplished!
Yesterday I got a call saying that they were cleaning out a storage room in the dorms and found an offroad roof rack, and would I like it?
Uhhh, does the pope protect child molesters? I'll be right there! Icing on the cake: 4,000lb jack bolted to the side!
Now, anybody have a 4x4 5 speed Cherokee they're tired of looking at? I'll also accept FJ62s, I think. Thread on that to come later.

Actually looks pretty cool on the 'Rex. In a sort of badass 'urban assault vehicle' way.
I want one of those for the roof of the V70.

[jedi voice ] you don't need that rack, send it to EricM [ end jedi voice ]
Oh, that is beyond coolness. Excellent score.
Whoa. Roof lights on a WRX Wagon. You may have inspired me.

Add a whip antenna and some jerry cans hanging off the back and you'd be looking better....maybe a swing-away spare tire carrier too.
now lift it!
hotlinked for your pleasure.
I like it on the scooby, other than that whole "weight up high" issue.

Very cool, but if I was interested in it rusting away in a yard I'd just throw it there sans bright yellow money pit.
Holy double post batman... my bad

Sums up Range Rover ownership right there ;-)
Both the Rover and the rack are beyond cool though!
I'd vote find a cheap jeep!
In reply to Osterkraut:
Yeah, but my Rover has Suede door panel inserts. Say it with me now: suuuuueeeeedddddeeeee.

Depending on if I go for a Land Cruiser I'm looking at today which HAS a rack, I could cut you a hell of a deal on it... sans jack, of course.
what a weird coincidence: I have XJ Cherokee with 5 spd and have been trying IN VAIN to find a Subie WRX wagon 5 spd. Not that you would trade....jst sayin

While I love my Subaru to death, the right XJ and a fistful of cash could go along way...
You'd be making quite a roadtrip, though!
With those two cars, just plot a straight line to each others doorways and meet half way. Much fast than following roads

That would be quite the trip.
Having driven a '98 5spd XJ for the past 140k miles let me say that it is by far the most reliable car I've ever owned. In my almost 10 yrs of ownership I've only ever changed the brake pads, belts, battery, plugs, air filter and replaced the waterpump due to a slight leak when parked.
I will however, give you some pointers on XJs because there is such a lack of knowledge base on the web
If I had to do it again, as blasphemous as it may sound on GRM, I'd get the auto. First off the autos come with 3.55 gears. The sticks get the 3.07s. That has always seemed backward to me. Why give the one with the torque converter the lower gears? An auto XJ with the same engine will leave mine for dead at a stop light. The auto will tow a heck of a lot more as well. IIRC the stick is only rated at a measly 1500 lbs towing capacity while the auto will go 5000. Reverse on the stick is not synchronized and will grind practically every time you put it in. Meh..you say? Try getting unstuck using the rock back and forth method. Not an easy task. On the trail, the auto makes it so so much easier to just ease up on an obstacle and drive over it. The only downside is that it doesn't hold back down hill.
Anyways...this is something you might consider. I figure you plan to regear anyway but you don't have to run such super low gears on an auto.
In reply to a401cj:
WTF. I haven't even bothered to look into the autos because, well, autos suck. Now you're telling me they don't? Aren't the later-model autos total E36 M3?
