FWD works well too with the right tires...but not as well.

Well, I have FWD with silly a/s tires, or RWD with traction tires and a locker but no weight in the back. Good thing I commute on foot.

A decent A/S is fine, as long as you don't want to be out in the worst of the storm. It just so happens I do

I had Blizzaks on my E36 and it was great in the snow. Definitely made me a believer that snows can make a 2 wheel drive car an excellent winter vehicle.

Current '05 Legacy GT gets 22-23 mixed. LSD in the rear end too. An '05 or newer Outback with the 2.5 turbo is the same engine the GT has with more ground clearance. Can be had with a five speed too. That said, our '95 base Legacy L is a bit better in snow as it has narrower a/s tires on it than the GT. Either one on snows would be an absolute blast.

Old Suburban with a 454. Really good in the snow. Wait, what was the question?

My 03 with cobb stage 2 setup gets 27-28mpg on the highway at 80mph.

Sure, that sounds fun and all, but I've saved more on Cobb parts than you have on fuel...

I second the Juke. It's like my GTX, with a little more stock power. I am seriously contemplating getting one next year. The AWD gets 24/27, IIRC.

07 WRX stage 2 (open source ) getting 27-28 mpg as well. My 02 WRX that was also stage 2 use to get 30 mpg. Before getting exhaust and a tune they both would get about 23-24 mpg.

Anyone OWN an SX4? I like the way they look (hey I like hatch back's, you don't have to have taste to be on this board.) and I like the depreciation, but are they worth a E36 M3?

VERY cool pics. Thanks for sharing. If it ever snowed here in the Richmond, VA area, I might actually want a Subie. No way otherwise I would put up with their quirkiness.

I'm assuming you had snow tires on your subie?

You're right. It doesn't snow often here in RVA. But last year was a barn burning year for snow! I think our totals were somewhere in the 2 foot, because only yankees pluralize and say 'feet', range last winter.

The g/f bought a subie Forrester just this year. I'm jazzed. Here's to hoping she doesn't hide the keys so I can't joy ride.

Reflash the ECU. My LGT averages 26mpg mixed driving.

What's the approximate cost for the WRX exhaust & tune that will get 30 mpg?

This requires investing in an AP, right? Hard to get that past the wifey at the moment since babyAK is due any day...

Tactrix cables use to be $75 but now they are up to $190. Use one of those plus some open source software and reflash your computer.

Best winter vehicle I have ever owned: 2001 Suzuki Grand Vitara V6 4wd auto. 2wd would get you around almost anywhere... when snow plows started getting stuck you reached down and grabbed the littel short lever and put it n 4wd. I swear that thing on 3/32 Kumho 716's got around better than our fullsize GMC did with new General's. Best thhing: It got 25mpg at anything less than 75mph.

quirkiness? Maybe that applies to the older ones? IDK, I came out of a 2000 Maxima and a 92 Accord and have a 08 4Runner and my wrx doesn't seem particularly quirky to me. Doesn't look quirky either...looks like a corolla :)

Juke....that's "quirky".....

Yep, Dunlop Wintersport 3D in 225/45/17 on the stock wheels. I used to have Blizzak LM-22 and LM-25 on the Maxima, which are similar.

you can do it opensource too....I have an AP since I got it for about $300 but I probably wouldn't have if it was full $600. The Cobb OTS stage 1 tune really makes the car feel like it "should" have new, plus it richens up the fuel mixture to get rid of annoying timing pulling in midrange. I've also noticed about 2mpg gain and dyno says plenty of power gain :)

I may be selling my APv2 on the cheap in the near future.

My LGT has proven to be a lemon. Even after putting a new shortblock in it.
