I discovered the fun way that nonturbo RX-7 trans (same as Miata) doesn't like aftermarket pressure plates. Snapped the pivot ball in half.
Ever since then, I put two thick beads of weld on the pivot ball inline with the fork. No problems yet.
As Keith said, the problem is inside.
The hydraulic system is so simple, I don't see why there should be a problem bleeding it.
But I haven't had to do one yet, so what do I know.

FYI Miata clutch forks can and will break. I had one go on my Miata due to simple age/use. The sprung steel fingers can weaken and eventually bend back or break off.
Notice that the final resolve of the OP's problem last year was also a broken fork.
Sigh... forgot to update...
It was a very worn and broken clutch disk
Having a similar problem now and stumbled upon my old thread :)
