A B6 Passat Wagon like mine misses the manual requirement but hits everything else. Makes the best noise and people love to see it AutoX (beat a Cobra last time out). Uber safe, excellent highway manners, unstopable in snow.
I spent 1500 on an extended warrenty so big ticket fails don't scare me like they could.

The trunk is gigantic, the interior is larger than an Impreza's, and, well, it's an Evo.

I've priced out the v160 getrag swap, you could buy a minty sports and swap in the 6 speed for $13k. Or…. swap a r series from a mk3 supra and be well under 10. A little work, but super unique car when you're done.

Re: Fuel Economy: 17-18 mpg on the daily commute. 23mpg this weekend to Florida and back with the cruise set between 75 & 80, loaded down with ~300 lbs. worth of guitar gear...or....pretty much exactly the same FE as my 4 cyl turbo shadow used to get. I love this berkeleying thing like aussiesteve loves hyundais.
Disclaimer: I've never loaded the kids in it, and the back seats look tight. It's more of an "If the 5 breaks down" scenario than a "drop the kids off at school everyday" car at this point.

Re: MS6: I have a buddy who bought one new and it's been a constant headache. I want to say 100k miles and on the 3rd(?) turbo with pretty normal driving. But don't quote me.
I would look at an E90 328i or a Mk6 GTI if you could live with a good FWD car.

There is a dealer like 5 minutes from me that has an 02 M5 for 11995. DDrove it and the car was damn near perfect.
BMW 335i sedan...can get earlier models in your price range and they are endlessly modifiable.
The M5 is about as good as I could do. 500hp, V10, rwd, big enough to haul the kid in comfort, and has the added benefit of being able to operate as an automatic (so the wife can drive it).
It is hard to argue with a car that retailed for over $100k, had a 2year waiting list, Top Gear called "brilliant... magnificent... motoring perfection", and Jeremy Clarkson said was better than a Ferrari F430 for less than $30k seems like a deal no one should pass up... and I couldn't.
Now if the shipping company would just get it to me!
In reply to BradLTL: Holy cats, I didn't come here expecting to see you buying a V-10 M5. What a home run. Enjoy that beastly feat of engineering. Post a few updates now and then, along with some MPG calcs!
I really wasn't either. I love the e39, the e60 has always been hugely impressive but not the best looking car. I decided that the angle from the driver's seat was its best looking spot.
I went about $3k over my budget but that was the wife's doing. I kept showing her cars and she would say "it's too old.. it has too many miles." And then she would say you can spend a bit more money to get a better car. That made the M5 available.
I'm happy to share mileage and experience... I might wait a bit on the MPGs... at least until my right foot lightens up a bit!
