What car are you waiting for to depreciate into your price range?

I'd really like a plain Elise but they have hit the bottom of the depreciation curve already.

My favorite CL search is all cars from $500 to $4000. I don't search by car, only by price. When something piques my interest, I jump. In the last year and a half, it's netted me a 93 Roadmaster for $1200, a 89 Thunderbird SC for $1500 and a 02 Jeep Liberty for $3500.

around here, they seemed to have stopped at around 15k, and most i see now are 17k+. same with the first gen MS3, they stopped around the time the second gen smiley faced ms3 came out, and have been steady or going up for a while.

but how much of it is the "5 year old or less used car shortage"? since people are supposedly holding on to their used cars for longer than they used to.

They sank like rocks for the first couple years, went back UP in price, and are holding steady at 12-15k now.

I have two:

996, 997 or Cayman. The recent Aussie GTO isn't bad either.

I'm also looking at the various, older cars that are now (or will be soon) legal to import to the US as they reach the 25 year limit. There's a bunch of neat cars we've been missing.

996s are already cheap. I can buy them at the dealer auctions, worth a whole bunch offers, for under $15k

This is my MO. I know what I like and want. If something slips into my price range, it is worth a harder look.

Unfortunately the depreciation level is about perfect for the ratio of available decent condition cars vs price, but my income level has not risen fast enough for me to afford maintenance. I like to have enough financial cushion to afford an engine replacement or transmission rebuild before I buy any car priced over beater status.

I do this as well, but too many in indiana lack a title.....I just flag their CL listing for that.

Lotta truth bombs in this post. I've owned 2 "cheap" CTS-Vs. Bought em, had my fun, sold 'em before I got hit with a $2,000 bill for brakes and tires.

I think the Corvette lovers will be some of the few that have depreciation on their side. Most of the other cars listed are too low volume to depreciate much more.

I've been driving past this car for the past few months... fortunately, for my bank account, they want way too much for it (nearly $10K over KBB). I could see maybe $20K, but $28K just seems a bit optimistic.It does look nice tho, in black with the aero kit.

I tend to agree. There are a number of cars I can generally afford to buy, but I'm not entirely sure I can afford to own. My above-mentioned P-car, for example. Not just the cost to buy and maintain, but insurance costs as well, which is often what drives me towards older cars I can get classic insurance on. It's fun to dream, tho...
