Four doors, manual trans, limited slip, less than 5k.

Autocrossable without a ton of mods. Looking for a car I can buy, throw on good tires and race in a Street class.

Go!

You can find speed 3's in that range that need some love.

Also the last generation SE-R spec v.

RX8 in that price range will likely be an 04/05 and will need some work. OTOH you can easily fit 245s on the stock rims (275 if you're really only using it for Auto-X) and they do handle well out of the box.

Just keep in mind that the cost of consumables is pretty high, even with a Mazdaspeed membership.

Not trying to talk you out of it, just be prepared to handle the additional care and feeding the rotary needs.

It checks all the boxes, but I would avoid it.

I'm a Nissan fanboi and currently have a quite rusty B15 SE. They're rare as hen's teeth. Deal on another one fell through so I came here.

I've thought about them, but their reliability issues concerns me. My SR20 has been dead nuts reliable.

If only those weren't approaching unicorn status.

How about the Ion Redline? 4(ish)-doors, supercharged 2.0L, fairly unique and available cheap

I have a non-rusty one I bought with some co-workers to use as a rallycross car. It's been a nightmare. It performs ok, when it runs. Its a pain in the ass to get parts for, and they are bizarrely expensive. It has a goofy rear suspension. It has a goofy bolt pattern.

You have to find a 2006. By that time, the reliability was good. Had a 2002 before my current 2006, and the 2006 is loads better. Nothing big but a LOT of little details. And for your budget, you should be able to get the nicest example available with room to spare.

I'll also add another fragile candidate from Mazda:

E30 or e36, limited slips are easily swapped in if not there, checks the other boxes, nice to drive.

Despite having cobalt in its name, you'll still be hard-pressed to find one for $5k.

Integra LS sedan + coilovers and wheels/tires should be a locally competitive STS setup.

Mazda 3 or Zetec or Duratec Focus + Coilovers and wheels/tires is a pretty damn good STF setup, although it's hard to find competition in STF.

I know that none of these have a limited slip, but they're pretty high on the fun per dollar with 4 doors scale.

Doesn't need to be zhp. Heck, get Pete's 330i and toss 3k into maintenance and mods, and you'll have a damn fine car.

ZHP doesn't get an LSD either: M3 was the only model E46 with a LSD... It's pretty expensive to add the LSD to the E46. Find a clean E36 328i and add a cheap LSD from an older model E36. They drive like they have much more power than they are rated at, are fun to drive and easy to live with. Room for enough tire, great aftermarket, and an LS1 upgrade path....

Yep, BMW E30/E34/E36 would fit the bill well, plus you get rwd in addition to that LSD.

All you guys suggesting beemers are forgetting what the OP asked for:

All the beemers will require a lot of maintenance and if you add an LSD, you are bumped out of street.

Too many BMW fanboys on this forum.
